Gokulnath Shetty reportedly shared bank password with Nirav Modi's employees

Gokulnath Shetty reportedly shared bank password with Nirav Modi's employees

Bhavnagar: A jeweller from Gujarat's Bhavnagar, Digvijay Singh Jadeja, on Friday said that he had informed the Gujarat High Court and the state government against Mehul Choksi, overseeing chief of Gitanjali Gems, in 2015, however no one heard him in those days.

The Hindu newspaper reported on Saturday that the Central Vigilance Commission, which investigates corruption in the government, has summoned senior officials of the Reserve Bank of India and the Finance Ministry to assess how all internal checks and balances failed to detect the fraud.

The ED team members then searched the outlet and seized diamond studded jewellery worth around Rs 1 crore from the locker, the officials said. "Independent valuation has been started", the agency said in a statement.

Contending that the Prime Minister's Office was informed about fraud after a whistle-blower, the Congress questioned how the jeweller was allowed to fly aboard and be part of PM Modi's delegation in Davos despite that.

The Uddhav Thackeray-led party, a BJP ally, said Mr Modi's promise of putting an end to corruption in the country, highlighted through his slogan "na khaunga, na khane dunga", was in tatters after the alleged fraudulent transactions of Rs 11,400 crore came to light. The passports have been suspended for a period of four weeks and the duo have been asked to respond within a week on why their passports should not be impounded or revoked under the Passports Act 1967.

As probe agencies tightened noose on Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi, interrogation of key accused Gokulnath Shetty has revealed involvement of several employees of the bank in the fraud. Speaking to reporters, Sitharaman said that Nirav Modi-run Firestar Diamond International was leased a property of a company in which Singhvi's wife is a director.

Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari said, "Bank frauds are tumbling out of the closet faster than you can say Jack Robinson".

Nirav Modi is one of India's richest people, with a personal wealth of $1.75bn, according to Forbes. A fresh FIR has been filed by the CBI on Friday. The total loans in the three firms belonging to Modi - Stellar Diamond, Solar Exports and Diamonds R Us - was Rs 3,992 crore, while the capital of the partners was Rs 400 crore, the I-T department said.

Meanwhile, the CBI has sought help from authorities all over the world through Interpol to locate Nirav Modi and airports have been informed through diffusion notice.

On Saturday, the Congress also accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of sleeping while the banking fraud of this magnitude was taking place.
