Kate Middleton's BAFTA Dress Brilliantly Balanced #TimesUp & Royal Protocol

Kate Middleton's BAFTA Dress Brilliantly Balanced #TimesUp & Royal Protocol

Thing is, while Kate didn't dress head-to-toe black in support, it's actually strictly against the Royal Family protocol to make political statements. This is the second time Kate has attended the TV awards; the first was a year ago, when she wore a black floral, off-the-shoulder gown. Kensington Palace declined to comment on Kate's decision to wear green instead of black in solidarity with other women.

For last year's star-studded awards night, the pregnant royal donned a cold-shoulder gown from go-to label, Alexander McQueen's resort 2016 line.

The dress code is similar to other red carpets, most notably the Golden Globes, when women and men both showed their support for gender equality and human rights for women.

The Duchess of Cambridge stood out a mile amid a sea of black at today's BAFTA film awards in London - but her choice of outfit faced criticism from some.

Margot Robbie, Jennifer Lawrence, Angelina Jolie and nearly every other major celebrity wore black on the red carpet tonight, which has been a dominant theme at awards shows in the wake of the Time's Up and #MeToo movements after the Harvey Weinstein scandal broke last fall.

And it's finally time for the silver screen's biggest stars to descend on London for the 71st British Academy Film Awards. Like last month's Golden Globes, stars walking the red carpet nearly universally opted to wear black in support of #TimesUp, the movement against sexual harrassment in the industry.

She said "wearing black is another manifestation of saying 'We don't want the world to continue as it has been". Prince William has been President of the Academy since February 2010.

With just months to go until the birth of her third child, Kate was seen hitting the red carpet with husband William.

"Catherine and I are extremely pleased to be here amongst you all this evening", William said at tonight's event.

Ridley Scott, whose films include "Blade Runner", "Alien", "Thelma and Louise" and "Gladiator", is set to receive the academy's highest honor, the BAFTA Fellowship.
