Iran: 'Scattered Bodies' at Aseman Airlines Wreckage Site

Iranian search and rescue teams have reached the site of the plane crash that authorities say killed all 65 people on board, Iran's Press TV reported on February 19.

Iran found the wreckage of the crashed Aseman Airlines ATR-72 plane on Monday and received condolences from Chinese, Russian leaders and United Nations for the victims of the incident and their families.

An Iran Aseman ATR 72 (EP-ATS) has crashed near the Dena Mountain, south of Isfahan en-route from Tehran Mehrabad to Yasuj, Iran - the second fatal airline accident this early in 2018.

"We still have no access to the spot of the crash and therefore we can not accurately and definitely confirm the death of all passengers", Mr. Tabatabai told the ISNA news agency.

Aseman Airline initially said everyone had been killed, but said later: "Given the special circumstances of the region, we still have no access to the spot of the crash and therefore we can not accurately and definitely confirm the death of all passengers of this plane".

Russian President Vladimir Putin also sent a condolence message to his Iranian counterpart Rouhani over the crash, the Kremlin said Sunday.

Hobbled for decades by sanctions and trade restrictions, Iran's domestic airline industry has one of the world's oldest passenger fleets.

Flight EP3704 left Tehran at 04:30 GMT on Sunday, and crashed about an hour later on Dena Mountain, near the city of Semirom in Isfahan province. According to data cited by the Flight Safety Foundation's aviation-safety.net website, it had been restored to service just three months ago after being in storage for six years. However, US President Donald Trump's refusal to recertify the deal has injected uncertainty into those sales. However, it is banned from flying in the European Union over safety concerns.

However, Aseman Airliner's technician and training manager, Capt. Bahador Ashayeri, denied any technical problem with the missing ATR plane. 74 people lost their lives. While easing these sanctions has led to a major deal between Iran and Boeing for the purchase of airplanes over the coming years, the body of the fleet of the country is still worn out. National carrier IranAir has ordered 80 planes from Boeing and 100 from Airbus.

In July 2009, a Russian-made jetliner crashed in northwestern Iran shortly after taking off from Tehran, killing all 168 on board. "He called later and said the plane had crashed".
