Samsung starts mass production of 30.72TB SAS SSDs

Samsung starts mass production of 30.72TB SAS SSDs

Samsung, which also has a thriving data storage business, unveiled the world's largest capacity solid state drive (SSD) with a mind-numbing 30.72 terabyte (TB) worth of storage on February 20. Instead, Samsung expects it to be a hit among enterprise customers, wanting to pack as much memory - and fast memory, at that - into as small a footprint as possible. It's called the PM1643 and uses Samsung's latest 64-layer 3-bit 512-gigabit chips. 32 of those were then combined into each 2.5-inch SSD. These 1TB packages can theoretically store 5,700 5GB, full HD movie files. After all, if the drive's transfer speeds were slow, actually getting all that data on or off the SSD would be a nightmare. This new drive offers nearly double of what it had launched about two years ago, a 15.36TB drive which at its time was the highest capacity SSD. It features random read and write speeds of up to 400,000 IOPS and 50,000 IOPS, and sequential read and write speeds of up to 2,100MB/s and 1,700 MB/s, respectively.

It's no slouch in performance, with a read speed of 2100MB/s and a write speed of 1700MB/s - which is a madman compared to current domestic offerings. Intended for use in next-generation storage systems in the government, health care and education sectors, it is now the industry's largest capacity SSD in production. It features Through Silicon Via (TSV) technology to interconnect 8Gb DDR4 chips, creating 10 4GB TSV DRAM packages totaling 40GB of DRAM. Among these advancements is a highly-efficient controller architecture that integrates nine controllers from the previous high-capacity SSD lineup into a single package.

Samsung has announced that it has started mass production of 30.72TB SSDs.

Importantly Samsung's error correction code (ECC) algorithm ensures high reliability and minimal storage maintenance. The MTBF figure is quoted at two million hours. Endurance levels are also extremely high, with a five year warranty during which you can write 30TB and fill the drive every single day. That'll include 15.36 TB, 7.68 TB, 3.84 TB, 1.92 TB, 960 GB, and 800 GB versions.
