DUP may call for direct rule in House of Commons debate

DUP may call for direct rule in House of Commons debate

Northern Ireland Secretary of State Karen Bradley has said that if the issue came before Parliament, they would allow a free vote on it.

Good Friday Agreement is a multilateral agreement signed among the British and Irish governments as well as political parties of Northern Ireland in Belfast, the regional capital city of Northern Ireland, on April 10, 1998.

Mr Varadkar spoke to British Prime Minister Theresa May on the phone following the meeting.

Patrick Corrigan of the Love Equality campaign for civil marriage equality said: "The outcome of the political talks has been deeply disappointing".

However, the issue of the Irish language act poses a barrier to negotiations which remains to be overcome.

"Whilst we all want to see a return of power sharing government and a vote for equal marriage in the Assembly, the Secretary of State is right to recognise the fact that the current discriminatory situation in Northern Ireland is unsustainable".

Ms Bradley also said it was the Government's view that both the DUP and Sinn Fein "participated in discussions seriously and in good faith", and that "progress towards reaching agreement on all the key substantive issues has been made".

Ms Bradley said the British Government's support for the Good Friday Agreement remains steadfast - and insisted the restoration of the Stormont Executive is in the best interests of everyone in the North.

"But we will only do that once we are sure that all other viable options created to restore devolved government have been properly considered", she said.

The Taoiseach's office said the Good Friday Agreement and subsequent agreements must be implemented in full and reiterated opposition to direct rule.

Sinn Féin has warned that direct rule is not an option for Northern Ireland as the Democratic Unionist Party called on the United Kingdom government to start setting budgets for schools and hospitals.

"I can not reiterate too strongly that devolved government is in the best interests of all the people of Northern Ireland because it ensures their interests and concerns are fairly and equitably represented".

"I am not prepared to allow this to continue. Challenging decisions will have to be taken".

As republicans sat down for talks with the Irish government on the Stormont power-sharing crisis, Arlene Foster, the DUP leader, was calling on Downing Street to start taking big spending decisions.

"We don't accept any call for a cooling-off period, in fact we're saying very clearly that there can not be vacuum, we need action and we need the two governments to be decisive at this point", she said. Direct rule is not on the table.
