NCAA strips Louisville of all wins from 2011-2015, including 2013 championship

NCAA strips Louisville of all wins from 2011-2015, including 2013 championship

Louisville interim president Greg Postel issued a statement after the NCAA announced its decision.

Louisville used Tuesday to make an unexpected announcement, as the university has released information in regards to the school's NCAA appeal ruling.

Former University of Louisville basketball star Kevin Ware still believes his Cardinals team is the 2013 national champion after losing its appeal with the NCAA Appeals Committee on Wednesday.

The decision stems from a 2015 NCAA investigation that found members of the coaching staff provided prostitutes and strippers for players and recruits. "While we disagree with the NCAA's decision, it is time for the university to close this chapter and move forward with a stronger commitment to excellence on and off the court".

The NCAA penalties, which were announced on June 15, included the vacation of basketball records in which ineligible student-athletes competed from 2011 to 2015. Louisville now must forfeit its third NCAA title, victories and income from 2012-15, part of the timeframe during which the violations occurred.

This includes the 2013 championship and an appearance the previous year in the tournament semi-finals known as the 'Final Four'.

Louisville knew they were going to get hit hard, but the hope was that they could avoid both postseason bans and losing wins - and titles from the past. Postel also said he and Interim Athletic Director Vince Tyra felt like the NCAA had its mind made up and never really listened to their argument.

Louisville sent a 68-page appeal to the NCAA on August 11, in which it said college sports' governing body imposed "Draconian" penalties and ignored the school's self-imposed punishment.

WKYT will be live in Louisville this evening breaking down the NCAA sanctions and the impact it will have on the university. This all made for an incredibly awkward subplot, as former head coach Rick Pitino now may want to reevaluate an unfortunate tattoo. He also said the NCAA ruling doesn't take away any accomplishments of the basketball team or the joy they brought. "There was an immediate recognition of the facts, the issuance of an apology, serious self-imposed penalties, extraordinary cooperation with the investigation that followed".
