Rick Gates is reportedly about to plead guilty to Robert Mueller

Rick Gates is reportedly about to plead guilty to Robert Mueller

The firm was hired by Viktor Yanukovych, the pro-Russian former Ukrainian president who opposed Tymoshenko and has ties to President Donald Trump's former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort.

Trump-aligned voices on Capitol Hill and in the media, meanwhile, prominently including Fox News, continue to call for Mueller's head, and attacks on Mueller from inside the White House have proliferated.

Van Der Zwaan is a lawyer at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP & Affiliates in London.

Gates, already facing a slew of charges from Mueller's office, is reportedly expected to accept a plea deal this week and has been working with prosecutors. Many considered Van der Zwaan's indictment quite insignificant while others, on the other side of the political divide, saw it as more evidence of Trump's collusion with Russian Federation.

The court filing says that Van Der Zwaan lied to investigators about his interactions with Rick Gates.

They have pleaded not guilty. The two also failed to disclose lobbying work on behalf of then-Ukraine President Viktor Yanukovych and then tried to hide that work as it came to light in August 2016, the US said.

On Friday, Mueller charged 13 Russian nationals with interfering in the USA election process.

Prosecutors accuse Van Der Zwaan of misstating the date of the conversation - 2014 instead of September 2016.

Van der Zwaan, 33, a Dutch national, entered the plea in U.S. District Court in Washington. Both have pleaded not guilty. He is expected to plead guilty Tuesday afternoon.

Van der Zwaan also deleted and failed to produce emails sought by the special counsel and a law firm, prosecutors said.

"Rick Gates is going to change his plea to guilty", an informed official told the daily on Sunday. A speaker of Russian, Dutch, English and French, van der Zwaan also is the son-in-law of a wealthy Russian, German Khan, who was on a roster of oligarchs named in a recent Treasury Department list of prominent Russians with links to President Vladimir Putin.

It is unclear if the case against Van der Zwaan, who according to reports worked in the London office of the Skadden Arps law firm, is connected to the broader question of whether or not the Trump campaign conspired with the Kremlin. Lawyers at the firm, including van der Zwaan, wrote it at Manafort's behest.

Skadden's $12,000 fee for its 2012 report on Tymoshenko was modest, just below the amount that required public bidding. The trio also sued Buzzfeed over its publication of the dossier.

The intelligence report compiled by former British spy Christopher Steele contains salacious allegations against Trump and details connections between his close associates and and Russians. The dossier has become a political lightning rod because Steele's work was funded in part by Clinton's campaign and the Democratic National Committee. The investigation into the two men is centered on foreign lobbying work they did before they worked on Trump's campaign.
