Sexual exploitation is widespread in the global aid sector, United Kingdom lawmakers told

Sexual exploitation is widespread in the global aid sector, United Kingdom lawmakers told

Oxfam's 2011 report, compiled in the year after aid workers were deployed to Haiti, revealed that seven staff were accused of using prostitutes at an Oxfam-funded residence.

Nigel Evans also said he and his colleagues will be asking "who knew what, and when" in relation to the Haiti sex scandal, asking Goldring and his fellow Oxfam bosses whether they informed ministers and the Haitian police of allegations that staff had used prostitutes.

The British charity's Chief Executive Mark Goldring told a parliamentary committee in London that 16 of the cases related to its global operation.

Goldring also said that the charity has received allegations of 26 new misconduct violations since the scandal broke out. He told the Guardian last week that the reaction was "out of proportion" and Oxfam was being treated as if it had "murdered babies in their cots".

Mr Goldring said he could not divulge the full details of the incidents but stated they were likely to range from "the very serious to something that wasn't dealt with properly".

Van Hauwermeiren said last week that months before the formal investigation, he had already forced two other workers in Haiti to resign because they had hired prostitutes.

The charity revealed 7,000 regular donors had been lost since the scandal emerged following reporting by The Times newspaper.

"It was not for Oxfam to decide whether a crime had been committed... that was the wrong decision".

Allegations of sexual misconduct have shaken the aid sector, with Haiti's president calling for investigations of other groups.

"I'm sure this is happening in Rohingya aid camps, I am sure it is happening round the world", she said.

Roland van Hauwermeiren, who led Oxfam's team in Haiti, was one of three staff members who resigned over allegations they hired young sex workers following the devastating 2010 quake there.

"At the time, I suspect there was a balance of saying "Oxfam is delivering life-saving assistance to a million people in Haiti".

"If we were culpable, which we were, they should have been completely transparent", he told the committee.

"We will not work with anybody who does not meet the high standards that we set and we believe are important", May added during a visit to a London school.

"I have spent my life trying to stand up for women's rights and to fight for people living in poverty". This is painful for me.

But on Tuesday Goldring apologized, saying he had been under stress after giving many interviews and thinking of the good work Oxfam was still doing around the world.

Ms Thomson, who became chairwoman of Oxfam's trustees in 2017, said the charity council's task was to ensure it is "never again" at risk of being perceived to have put reputation over accountability.

Oxfam has pledged to overhaul its recruitment and vetting procedures and submit to an independent commission to investigate allegations of sex abuse.
