Uber Eats driver suspected of killing customer

Uber Eats driver suspected of killing customer

Robert Bivines is pictured in this mugshot from a 2009 arrest.

Atlanta, Ga. police believe the shooting happened after the customer and the driver got into an argument around 11:30 p.m., reports the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

Thornton died at a hospital. His attorney claimed that Bivines shot the customer in self-defense. "My client had no choice but to defend himself", he tells WXIA.

Patterson said Thornton was irate that it took a while for his food to arrive.

"Words may have been exchanged", Brown said. Thornton then reached into his jacket pocket and shouted "I'm going to f- you up", according to Bivines's attorney.

Jones asked Patterson why his client, who had only been on the job less than a week, didn't just drive away.

Bivines then allegedly fired four bullets through the passenger-side window into Thornton's torso, WSB-TV. Whether or not the act was self-defense or not.it will be up to the judge when Bivines makes his first court appearance on Tuesday. According to company policy, all drivers have to have passed a background check performed by a third-party company, which looks back seven years.

In October, a San Antonio Uber driver was charged with sexual assault after he allegedly raped an unconscious passenger in his vehicle. The police department responded to a call mid-Saturday of a person being shot in a north Atlanta neighborhood.

Currently, each Uber driver must have their motor vehicle records screened as well as undertake an in-depth criminal screening at the county, state and federal levels.

"Thornton, 30, was a recent graduate of Morehouse College".

"We are shocked and saddened by this news", the spokesman said.
