Abbas Calls for Multilateral Peace Efforts

Abbas Calls for Multilateral Peace Efforts

"The U.S. and Israeli leaders don't know Iran and don't understand the power of resistance and therefore, they continuously face defeat", Rezaei told Hezbollah-affiliated Al Manar News. An upgrade to full membership would require unanimous backing from the Security Council, and the US would veto such a move.

Haley, who was joined at the United Nations by Trump's son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner and special Mideast envoy Jason Greenblatt, addressed Abbas directly in her remarks even though the PA president left the chamber immediately after his speech.

'Our negotiators are sitting right behind me, ready to talk.

In Washington, Zaha Hassan, an attorney and fellow at New America who was a legal adviser to the Palestinian negotiating team from 2010 to 2012 said, "The best Abbas can hope for is that the world will not break ranks and join the U.S.in twisting worldwide law and principles to Israel's will".

Russian UN ambassador Vassily Nebenzia said the so-called Quartet - made up of the United Nations, the United States, Russia and the European Union - and the League of Arab States could play a role in kick-starting the stalled peace process.

She said the USA offers an "outstretched hand" to the Palestinian people but "we will not chase after you" and "the choice is yours".

Israel's United Nations ambassador is accusing Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas of refusing direct peace negotiations with Israel and is calling him "the problem" - not the solution. He outlined principles tied to previous United Nations resolutions and commitments signed by both Israel and the Palestinians: mutual recognition between Israel and a state of Palestine based on 1967 lines with East Jerusalem as a Palestinian capital, a halt to settlement growth, "minimal land swaps, in equal value and ratio", a "just and agreed solution for the Palestine refugees", and "halting transfer of the US embassy to Jerusalem". "The choice, Mister President, is yours".

"To solve the Palestine question, it is essential to establish a multilateral worldwide mechanism emanating from an global conference", the PA president said. I assure that path will get the Palestinian people exactly nowhere toward the achievement of their aspirations.

Haley was accompanied at the United Nations by Jared Kushner, Trump's son-in-law and chief adviser on Israel-Palestinian peace efforts, and by Middle East envoy Jason Greenblatt.

"If you end your assistance they become terrorists or refugees in Europe", Abbas said. He additionally cited the administration's decision to slash funding for UNRWA, while criticising Trump for threatening to shutter the Palestine Liberation Organisation's offices in Washington.

Yet Abbas, however frustrated with the US, told the Security Council he is not ready to part ways. "We were rejected last time", stated Abbas.

Haley slammed Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat for previously telling her to "shut up", and informed the Palestinians that they'd ultimately receive nothing unless they drop their "absolutist demands, hateful rhetoric, and incitement and violence".

Haley criticised the UN Security Council for holding another session on this issue, saying, "This session on the Middle East has been taking place each month for many, many years". "Rather, I will respectfully speak some hard truths".

Shortly after the speech, the White House said it is still moving forward with a Middle East peace plan, spearheaded by Trump's Mideast advisers, Jared Kushner and Jason Greenblatt, while calling Abbas's speech "old talking points and undeveloped concepts for each of the core issues".

Later in the day White House spokesperson Josh Raffel who deals with the Middle East portfolio issued a statement that the Trump administration "will continue working on our plan which is created to benefit both the Israeli and Palestinian people".
