Volvo V60 official details revealed and now comes with advanced tech

The new V60 leads Volvo's green program, offering not one but two plug-in hybrid powertrains. Very pragmatic. Very Swedish.

That might not seem like the most interesting location for a global unveiling, but there's a reason.

Thankfully Volvo survived and is on a roll, a seven-percent boost to sales resulting in production exceeding half a million cars in 2017 and China alone (Volvo's biggest market) seeing a 25.8 per cent year on year increase.

In the Internet appeared the first photos, which show the Volvo V60 wagon new generation.

Lex Kerssemakers, a Volvo senior vice president, confirmed in an interview with Roadshow that the new S60 will be coming soon.

It's business as usual in the V60's smart interior, too, with a design that echoes the other cars in the range. Once all engine configurations are on sale, two plug-in hybrids will sit at the top of the range - a new T6 Twin Engine with 335bhp and a T8 Twin Engine with 385bhp. In the U.S., the V60 will be offered with two gasoline powertrains: a T5 FWD providing 250 hp and a T6 AWD with 316 hp.

Unsurprisingly, there will be the usual diesel and petrol options - V60 D3 and D4 diesels and T4 and T5 petrols - although the petrols won't be available at launch. All models in the US will drive through an eight-speed auto.

Looking not unlike a smaller scale V90, the new vehicle will start at £31,810 and replace the current (very good) V60 which was launched in 2011. Cues like the cool-sounding "Thor's Hammer" running light signature balance assertiveness to compete with the premium German rivals with a more understated overall look demonstrating Volvo has its own way of playing the same game. Both of these gas engines employ an 8-speed automatic transmission.

Design-wise? Not much if you're used to looking at Volvo's larger 90 Series of cars. Volvo is renowned for its supreme safety tech, so it comes as no surprise that the V60 is equipped with all manner of hi-tech driver assists.

The City Safety with Autobrake technology uses automatic braking and detection systems to assist the driver in avoiding potential collisions, and is the only system on the market to recognise pedestrians, cyclists and large animals. The ability to do the same in the face of oncoming vehicles and mitigate head-on impacts is claimed as a world first. Figures of the the top-of-the-line T8 variant should be familiar too, as this hybrid pushes you forward with 390 horsepower (303+87) and 472 foot-pounds. Lane departure and cross-traffic alerts are also part of the safety suite. Volvo's Sensus infotainment system with a portrait-mounted screen sits in the centre of the dashboard and will offer Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and 4G connectivity.
