Google faces lawsuit for firing critic of anti-diversity memo

Google faces lawsuit for firing critic of anti-diversity memo

The ex-Googler alleges that the company fired him over writing pro-diversity internal posts.

A former Google engineer has filed a lawsuit alleging that he was sacked for speaking out against James Damore's controversial memo about gender, the latest development in a litigious battle over diversity and speech at the technology company.

Just last month a similar lawsuit was filed by an ex-Google engineer James Damore, who was sacked after he circulated the misogynist iniquitous 33,000-word memo talking about diversity at the company.

For those unfamiliar with the matter, James Damore wrote an infamous internal memo past year condemning diversity and arguing that men are biologically more suitable to work in the tech industry.

In January Damore filed a lawsuit claiming the company discriminates against white, conservative men.

"It is a cruel irony that Google attempted to justify firing me by claiming that my social networking posts showed bias against my harassers", Chevalier said in a statement to The Verge.

Google spokesperson Gina Scigliano said: "An important part of our culture is lively debate", Gizmodo has reported. But like any workplace, that doesn't mean anything goes. "All employees acknowledge our code of conduct and other workplace policies". Other employees then suggested on the message board that Google would have to lower its hiring standards to increase its number of minority workers.

Google, on its part, says that employees should be communicated in a manner that complies with the company's policies.

A picture taken on November 20, 2017 shows logos of U.S. multinational technology company Google displayed on computers' screens. "We always make our decision without any regard to the employee's political views", she added. Google fired Chevalier in November 2017, specifically citing these social media posts, which had been discussed on a previous call with HR, as the cause for termination. "Ultimately, Google fired Chevalier".

The Damore lawsuit included almost 100 pages of screen shots of internal communications at Google which the suit alleged demonstrated widespread hostility against conservative viewpoints.

In his complaint, Chevalier stated that according to HR, the term "White Boys" could be perceived as the generalization about the race or gender.

Damore was sacked over the memo that Google also said violated its codes of conduct, and returned fire with a class-action lawsuit claiming the company actively discriminates against conservative white men.

Chevalier's lawsuit says that when he began at Google in 2015, Google's workforce was largely "homogenous", composed "overwhelmingly" of cisgender white men - and that "its workplace culture reflected their views".

For now, Google remains legally challenged and internally mired in the same culture war that's engulfed much of the country. The agency believes that Damore was not ousted because he criticized the policies of Google, but over "unprotected discriminatory statements" in his memo.
