Toddler missing as flooding forces thousands from their homes in Ontario

Toddler missing as flooding forces thousands from their homes in Ontario

Ice from the Grand River was pressing up against the dike and officials were anxious about a breach sometime Wednesday.

Lehman advised people to stay away from the water's edge, as the river will be moving at risky volumes of about 30,000 cubic feet per second, and to not drive through standing water. Six Nations Police were called to help a woman stranded at her home on Fourth Line.

Police say the mother lost her grip on the boy and he was swept away.

"I spoke to a woman who lives in Eagle Place (one of the evacuated neighbourhoods). and she had a foot of water in her living room, and the basement was entirely flooded", he said.

Roughly 2,200 homes and up to 4,900 people were impacted by the early morning evacuation, according to Brantford Mayor Chris Friel. They watched as the fast-moving waters brought chunks of ice, debris and fallen trees to a jam in the river.

Davey lives outside the evacuation zone, but said those who live within it have far more to worry about.

Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne visited Brantford Wednesday evening, where she thanked first responders and city officials.

While Branch County has had to deal with a number of high water issues this week, it has not reached the level that other communities in the region have had to face.

Friel said the water was so high at one point that it was running over the deck of a pedestrian bridge used by residents to cross the river.

In particular, Cayuga and Dunnville residents within the floodplain are being warned to be aware of potential flooding and to take precautions, such as ensuring that their sump pumps are in good working order, securing any loose items in low-lying areas and keeping children and pets well away from the water and the river and creek banks, as they are very slippery.

Const. Paul Nancekivell told CBC K-W police have not been able to confirm if anyone else was in the vehicle.

A woman was pulled from the vehicle, which was swept approximately four kilometres downstream and then became lodged in the riverbed near the Highway 109 bridge. "Not quite to the degree of 2013 but we don't know because all we have are projections". "People need to use basic common sense here".
