Borked Apple devices are making bogus 911 in California

Borked Apple devices are making bogus 911 in California

Now the plod have manage to trace the calls back to the source - and it's one of Apple's United States iPhone fix labs.

As mentioned above, the calls have been happening on a daily basis since October of 2017, with an average of 20 calls each day.

A single facility seems to be at fault for hundreds of false alarm 911 calls from Apple devices over the past few months.

Emergency response teams in Sacramento County and Elk Grove, California, have taken more than 1,600 false alarm calls from an Apple refurbishment and fix site in the locality.

It isn't clear whether it's Apple Watch or iPhone devices making the accidental calls.

CBS reports Elk Grove police are working with the iGiant to stop the mobes flooding the 911 call center.

While the false Elk Grove calls are notable due to their frequency, it's not the only place where local emergency services are receiving false alarms via an Apple product.

"We're able to see quickly where the call is coming from, so when we get one from Apple, the address will come up with their location", Police dispatcher Jamie Hudson told the station.

Apple told the TV station it's investigating the issue and vows to resolve it.

AN APPLE refurb facility in California has been identified as the source of a series of mysterious silent calls to the emergency services.

While annoying for police, the volume of the calls is not enough to overwhelm operators or put the public in danger from missed 911 calls, we're assured. That software includes a way to make quick emergency calls without having to unlock the phone.

According to CBSLocal Sacramento, an Apple spokesperson provided the following statement. Apple's SOS feature for iPhone and Apple Watch was meant to solve problems in emergency situations.

As users continue to hold down the button, a countdown will begin and an alert sounds. I accidentally held down both volume buttons, and wound up talking to the City of Houston's 911 call center. Emergency SOS will call contacts and local emergency services after the sleep/wake button is pressed five times in rapid succession. As with the iPhone, you get a screen with a slider for making an emergency call, and if you keep holding the button, the 911 call starts automatically.

You can disable auto-calling on the iPhone by going to Settings Emergency SOS and tapping the Auto-Call slider.
