Father slashes son's throat, almost decapitating 2-year-old

Father slashes son's throat, almost decapitating 2-year-old

A father in Chicago is accused of almost decapitating his young son after the boy's body was discovered in a trash bag in their home, police said.

Police responding to a call from relatives found the boy in a home in the city's Little Village neighborhood.

Police told reporters that the toddler had suffered severe trauma and fatal stab wounds that went so deep that he was almost decapitated. According to the authorities, the man got out of bed, grabbed the two-year-old, dragged him to the kitchen where he took a knife and slashed his throat so deep, that he almost decapitated the child.

Ortiz found a garbage bag full of clothes, emptied it and placed his child's body in the bag, police said.

He was arrested almost 50 miles away in Kankakee County, following a traffic stop by state police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and was "immediately" brought back to the Chicago area.

It wasn't immediately clear if Ortiz had an attorney who could comment on his behalf.

Two-year-old Mateo Garcia Aguayo was alone with his father while his mother was at work Wednesday.

"Mateo wasn't old enough to make a bad decision", Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson during a news conference. (Ortiz) grabs the 2-year-old in the kitchen and holds him down, (Ortiz) then retrieves a knife, cuts the baby in the throat, causing his death.

Chicago Police Supt. Eddie Johnson on Thursday called Mateo's murder "brutal and horrific".

After the attack, police said Ortiz tried to slit his own wrists before fleeing the scene. When officers arrived, the child was unresponsive and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Deenihan said Ortiz and his wife have six other children and hopes the arrest will bring "some level of closure" to the family. Mateo wasn't old enough to take the wrong path in life. When they found Aguayo's body they called 911. He was just an innocent kid whose trust and safety was betrayed by the one man he should never have to question. They're police officers and they have families, of course it affects them'. Deenihan said the father confessed to the grisly crime while in police custody.

In preparation for his night shift, the Little Village man went to his bedroom but was awaken several times by Mateo who was running and screaming around the house.

"These are the kinds of tragedies that keep police officers working without sleep because many of us are parents", Johnson told reporters.
