Google Assistant to gain 30 languages, multilingual support

Google Assistant to gain 30 languages, multilingual support

In a new blog entry, Google discussed future capabilities of its Google Assistant, including support for over 30 languages before the end of the year.

Currently, the Assistant is available in eight languages. But if you speak Danish, Dutch, Hindi, Indonesian, Norwegian, Swedish or Thai, get excited, because your Google Assistant will be able to respond to you by text in the next few months.

The language support will also expand so you can speak multiple languages to your Assistant, making way for multi-lingual speakers to address the Assistant in the language they feel comfortable with at that moment - say, French at work and English at home, or any other combination.

But that's not all Google is working on in the linguistics department, as families and individual users that speak more than one language will soon be able to carry a natural conversation with the Assistant. What this means is that users will be able to have Assistant handle a handful of separate tasks with a single command.

Google started a wide roll out of Assistant nearly exactly a year ago, supporting only English. That way you can get your assistant to remind you to buy more eggs or bread while at the grocery store. Multilingual support will first be available in English, French, and German.

Device-specific Assistant commands to launch custom hardware and software features. Google notes that the rollout will reach 95% of all eligible Android phones.

Even if Google's assistant doesn't eavesdrop, its presence on an indoor security camera is likely to focus more attention on the handling and protection of the data collected through internet-connected devices.

Routines was announced past year as a way to get multiple things done with one voice command. Meanwhile, Google has worked closely with OEMs to improve the Assistant experience on third-party devices. Some manufacturers such as Samsung, which has developed its own intelligent assistant called Bixby, may decide not to partner with Google in this initiative. There will be six routines to "help with your morning, commutes to and from work, and evening at home". Expect to see such integrations from LG, Sony, and Xiaomi soon.

Google Assistant will work with your wireless carrier: Google isn't satisfied with just phones turning to its assistant; it wants to work with your wireless provider, too. This can be anything from learning more about their cellular plan, to adding new services to their current plan, getting customer support and more.
