Butland howler gifts Leicester an equaliser

Butland howler gifts Leicester an equaliser

The visitors were rewarded for their confident start, moving ahead in the 43rd minute. Albrighton's whipped delivery from the left was headed away by Stoke's Cameron, but his clearance fell to an unmarked Matty James who struck an effort which flew over the bar from 17 yards out.

Mahrez should have done better when a long ball from Demarai Gray saw Leicester break, but the Algeria worldwide curled a trademark 25-yarder wide of the far post with his left foot. The Senegalese worldwide drove forward and hit a low driven shot from just outside the box, but Schmeichel was able to make a comfortable save down to his left. Joe Allen robbed the ball off Ndidi on the left and played a simple pass to Shaqiri.

As the 80th minute arrived the Foxes had two chances to take the lead in quick succession.

"I have no fear about Jack Butland because he is a top goalkeeper".

As the second half got underway Leicester resumed their efforts to find the equaliser but continued to struggle to fashion chances, and nearly went further behind when Kasper Schmeichel made a reckless pass to Harry Maguire that allowed Shaqiri to look for his second of the day, but his first-time effort went wide.

After the half-time break, the Foxes looked a lot more threatening with Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez getting onto the ball more often and causing the Stoke back four all sorts of trouble.

"He is the best goalkeeper in Britain", said Lambert.

From the resulting set piece, the ball was played to Mahrez who found Maguire with an outswinging cross, only for the defender to head against the far post before the away team eventually cleared.

Leicester were now pushing for the victor and Mahrez probably should have scored in the 88th minute when he latched onto Charlie Adam's header, but his attempt to chip Butland from five yards out was excellently blocked by Zouma.

Butland's mistake was made all the more embarrassing by the presence of former England, Leicester and Stoke hero Peter Shilton in the stands although manager Paul Lambert refused to blame his keeper for the dropped point.
