Clayton-Based Enterprise Drops NRA Discount For Rental Cars After Parkland Shooting

Clayton-Based Enterprise Drops NRA Discount For Rental Cars After Parkland Shooting

The National Rifle Association, and now the State of Florida, faced a growing backlash as companies cut ties to the gun industry following the latest school massacre, and student survivors called for tourism boycotts of their home state until gun control measures are enacted. The NRA "member benefits" page offers savings on a credit card, hearing aids, life insurance, home security systems, auto purchases, moving fees, prescription drugs, and branded checkbooks, among other things.

Until this week, the NRA touted a deal with MetLife to offer NRA members "generous pre-negotiated NRA group discounts" for automobile insurance.

First National Bank of Omaha announced Thursday that it would not renew its contract to issue NRA-branded credit cards, The Washington Post reported.

Delta and United said Saturday that they will end their discount programs for members of the NRA.

"Customer feedback has caused us to review our relationship with the NRA", First National Bank of Omaha told CNBC.

Enterprise Holdings, the parent company of the rental cart brands Enterprise, Alamo and National, announced in a tweet on Thursday plans to end a program that offered discounts to NRA members.

And the list went on.

Members of the NRA have access to special offers from partner companies on its website, ranging from life insurance to wine clubs.

Corporate lawyers say the NRA could argue for money damages if those companies terminate the long-term contract before the expiration date, but they feel it is unlikely to do so.

Companies are throwing themselves headfirst into the gun debate by having agreements in place with the NRA.

By their count, more than a dozen have already ended their relationships.

Company spokespeople would not elaborate on the announcements. None of the other companies immediately responded to media requests for comment. It's since deleted the tweet, but before it did, 81 percent of the 5 thousand voters said they thought the company should bail for Instagram.

And as for one company that hasn't broken its ties to the NRA yet...

"Affinity relationships" between college alumni and other membership groups and financial companies, airlines, and other companies grew in the 1980s and '90s.

ThinkProgress reports Wyndham Worldwide stopped offering NRA discounts following a pressure campaign after the Sandy Hook shooting.

NRA spokeswoman Dana Loesch told a crowd at the Conservative Political Action Conference that she thinks it's because of race that mass shootings garner more outrage and attention than more common urban gun crimes. The company said it intends to speak to gun manufacturers to "understand their response" to the attack.

Meanwhile, shares of gun companies mostly fell in midday trading Friday.

Activists have also called on public pension funds to divest from gun maker stocks, which were broadly lower on Friday. Among them is Flordia Governor Rick Scott, who supports raising the minimum age for gun purchases from 18-years-old to 21. And fellow school shooting survivor Cameron Kasky founded the #NeverAgain movement, a stand against gun violence.
