Donald Trump Sides with General Kelly in Security Squabble with Jared Kushner

Donald Trump Sides with General Kelly in Security Squabble with Jared Kushner

President Donald Trump on Friday said that White House chief of staff John Kelly will ultimately "make that call" regarding whether to waive or revoke Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner's interim security clearance. Most prominent among them is Kushner, President Donald Trump's son-in-law, who has had access to some of the nation's most sensitive material for the past year while waiting for his background investigation to be completed.

The day before Rosenstein's call to McGahn, The Post reported that Kushner was among dozens of White House personnel who were relying on interim clearances while their FBI background investigations were pending.

Awkwardly, that includes Kushner: One year into the job, he lacks a permanent clearance but has been receiving the top-secret Presidential Daily Brief and viewing classified material as part of his remit to improve relations in the Middle East and in Asia.

But he's not alone. But Vanity Fair says that by issuing a red line, Kelly has pulled off a "political masterstroke" by training more spotlight on the president's ethics, which will endure whether he stays or goes.

"I can tell you that nothing that has taken place will affect the valuable work that Jared is doing", White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Tuesday.

But his free-wheeling reach in the foreign policy space - which was viewed as undermining Secretary of State Rex Tillerson - had already been curtailed somewhat under Kelly. He did not specify the source of the information that officials were examining, the three people said.

Porter resigned on February 7, the same week multiple news outlets ran stories in which both of his ex-wives accused him of physical abuse, including one who offered a photo of a black eye she says he gave her.

Kushner has held an interim security clearance for more than a year, his attorney, Abbe Lowell, told The Associated Press last week. A source familiar with the matter said earlier this week that the situation had caused tensions between Kushner and Kelly. General Kelly respects Jared a lot and General Kelly will make that call.

The issues with granting such access on an interim basis came under scrutiny earlier this month after one of Trump's top aides, Rob Porter, was forced to step down amidst allegations of spousal abuse that were revealed in media reports. Despite not having a final clearance, Kushner has had a high level of access in the White House and has seen some of the nation's most sensitive secrets.

The White House did not respond to a request for comment.

Among the potential problems: repeated amendments that he had to make to a form detailing his contacts with foreign officials.
