Governor Indicted after Blackmailing Mistress with her Nude Photos

Governor Indicted after Blackmailing Mistress with her Nude Photos

Several lawmakers on both sides of the political aisle have called for Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens' resignation from his post after he was briefly taken into custody Thursday, following indictment on a felony invasion of privacy charge.

The name of the woman who had an affair with Greitens has not been disclosed and is referred to only as "K.S." in the indictment.

"As I have said before, I made a personal mistake before I was Governor", Greitens said in a statement Thursday.

Kim Gardner, St Louis circuit attorney, announced the charge following an investigation launched in January after Mr Greitens admitted he had been "unfaithful" with his hairdresser in 2015.

The charge stems from allegations that Greitens used a photo of his naked mistress as a form of blackmail to keep her quiet about their affair.

Amid the furor, Greitens dismissed the accusations against him in a statement.

According to St. Louis TV station KMOV the image involved a "state of full or partial nudity without the knowledge and consent ... in a place where a person would have a reasonable expectation of privacy". In unprecedented fashion, the Circuit Attorney circumvented the local police force and hired her own investigators - we attempted to meet with the Circuit Attorney and make the Governor available to discuss the issues.

"Everything flows from the top, and you look at what's going on with our president, this doesn't really surprise me", KC resident Howard Townsend said.

For 40 years as an attorney for the public and for private litigants, I have never seen anything like this. Greitens had acknowledged the affair but denied the blackmail allegation.

"It is essential for residents of the City of St. Louis and our state to have confidence in their leaders", Gardner said.

Gov. Eric Greitens has denied the claims

Greitens, a Republican, declared his innocence in a written statement, and alleged the indictment is a "misguided political decision" by a "reckless liberal prosecutor".

Greitens surprised many experts by defeating Democratic Attorney General Chris Koster in the November 2016 election.

Republican Sen. Caleb Rowden, of Columbia, said on Twitter that he was "disgusted to learn" a grand jury found sufficient evidence to indict the Republican governor on a charge of felony invasion of privacy.

The Democratic Governors Association called for Greitens to resign late Thursday - and you can expect plenty more Democrats to follow suit. Among them: Republican state Senator Caleb Rowden (R-Columbia).

The Missouri Republican Party says the indictment against Gov. Eric Greitens amounts to a "political hit job" by a Democratic prosecutor.

This is not the person Missourians thought they were voting for in 2016.

Dowd did go on to file a motion to dismiss the charge.

"We will carefully examine the facts contained in the indictment and answer the question as to whether or not the governor can lead our state while a felony case moves forward", Richardson and Rep. Elijah Haahr and Missouri House Majority Leader Rob Vescovo said in a joint statement, St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.

Governor Greitens faces up to four years in prison if he's convicted of the felony count.

The judge said Greitens is free to travel the country until his next court date on March 16. His use of a secretive app that deletes messages is under investigation by Republican Attorney General Josh Hawley. Some saw him as a rising Republican star with potential presidential aspirations.
