BJP to gain in Rajya Sabha biennial polls on March 23

BJP to gain in Rajya Sabha biennial polls on March 23

In recent times, opposition parties have interrupted proceedings of the upper house demanding discussion on their matters of choice, so now the increasing strength of the BJP would help the party to stop opposition parties.

In August 2017, the BJP overtook Congress and became the largest political party in the Rajya Sabha.

Elections to all these 59 seats will take place on 23rd March and the counting too will be done on the same day.

Of the 10 seats, eight will go to the BJP and and one to the SP. Her party could win only 18 seats with the BJP seizing power by winning more than 300 of the state's 403 seats and making major inroads into UP's significant Dalit vote.

In UP, where the maximum seats will fall vacant, the BJP expects to win at least nine.

Presently, the Congress and the NCP each have two of these six seats while the BJP and Shiv Sena share the remaining.

RJD chief Lalu Yadav had offered to send Ms Mayawati to the upper house from Bihar in July previous year after she resigned, accusing the BJP of not allowing her to raise the issue of anti-Dalit violence in Uttar Pradesh.

Three members each from Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and Rajasthan will retire, triggering elections, while Jharkhand will be able to send two representatives to the Upper House.

BJP leaders hope that along with allies and other parties like AIADMK, TRS, BJD and YSR, they will have an upper hand in the RS.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been calling for simultaneous Lok Sabha and assembly polls.

The terms of several Union ministers, including Arun Jaitley, Prakash Javadekar, Ravi Shankar Prasad, Dharmendra Pradhan, J.P. Nadda, Thaawar Chand Gehlot and Ramdas Athawale are ending.

In Bengal, Trinamool Congress MPs Nadimul Haq and Vivek Gupta are set to complete their RS term. The ruling party now has eight out of 10 Rajya Sabha seats under its fold. The seat is now being contested by the JD-U, which had initially announced that it would not contest any of the three seats going for by-polls.
