Eddie Jones fronts up after Scotland smash England in Six Nations

Eddie Jones fronts up after Scotland smash England in Six Nations

It was Scotland's first victory over their oldest rivals in a decade and just England's second defeat in 26 tests under Australian coach Eddie Jones, with Ireland now the only side left in this season's Six Nations who can complete a grand slam.

Ireland reached second back in August 2015, ahead of the World Cup, but fell back to sixth before they beat New Zealand at Soldier Field, in November 2016.

Led by the brilliance of Huw Jones, who scored a brace of tries, and Finn Russell - criticised before the game but at the heart of Scotland's best play - the hosts opened up a 16-point halftime lead, with Sean Maitland also touching down.

Gregor Townsend's side won 10 turnovers to England's four, while Jones will be well aware that his team finished the match with another heavy penalty count against them. "They deserved the victory and played very well", Jones said.

"I have got take responsibility for the performance because we weren't there".

Something had gone wrong, and afterwards, Eddie Jones did what Eddie Jones does - he refused to blame the players and took responsibility himself. And England were well and truly on the rack by half-time as the impressive Jones broke clear again to leave the visitors scampering back in front of their own line.

There was a time, not long ago, when a debate centred on Scotland's worthiness of a Six Nations place. It's 138 years of rugby history.

"We knew all of that but we weren't good enough to handle it".

"It's human nature, unfortunately we just weren't in the game for the first 40 minutes, so full marks to Scotland".

He said: "We know we've got Ireland, an outstanding team with great record".

Russell's resulting penalty gave Scotland a 12-point lead which they defended superbly to thwart England's attacking raids and seal a stunning victory that keeps alive their hopes of winning their first Six Nations title since the tournament expanded.

"In the second half they were a lot, lot better but the cat is out the bag, the crowd are going insane and everything seems to be going against you. It's a quiet changing room, it's disappointing and some players are down, but we have to learn from it".

As you would expect after a pep talk from Eddie Jones at half time England came out with plenty of intensity in the second half.

Romelu Lukaku chose the visit of former club Chelsea to end his scoring drought against the Premier League's top teams and produce his best performance for Manchester United.

"It's a feeling I've never had [beating England]", he said, having been named man of the match. It maybe gets played up, made more of than what it was.
