Turkey: Former Syrian Kurdish leader detained in Prague

Turkey: Former Syrian Kurdish leader detained in Prague

"Our hope is the Czech Republic will hand him over to Turkey".

He was reported to have been in the Czech capital to attend a biannual conference on the Middle East which was discussing the war in Syria, the Turkish government and the Israeli-Arab conflict.

Turkey denies any "atrocities", insisting that civilians are excluded from the targets of its air-and-ground incursion launched more than a month ago.

The move came after Turkey put out an Interpol alert for his arrest.

Turkey's ministries were working to secure the extradition of Muslim, said Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Bekir Bozdag. "It is logical that the Turkish minister would like to talk about this with our minister", Lagronova told reporters on Sunday, adding that phone talks between the two foreign ministers had not been scheduled so far.

Czech police confirmed a 67-year-old foreigner was being held after being detained on Saturday based on a Turkish Interpol notice.

It said he was due to appear in a Czech court and that the Turkish authorities would press for his extradition.

Turkey considers the PYD a "terrorist group" linked to outlawed Kurdish insurgents fighting within Turkey's own borders.

Muslim was replaced as co-chair of the PYD previous year, but remains a member of the diplomatic committee of the TEV-DEM political coalition that administers the Kurdish-controlled areas of northern syria. He was replaced in 2017.

On Jan. 20, Turkey launched an incursion into northern Syria, seeking to rout the US-backed Syrian Kurdish militia, known as the People's Protection Units or YPG, from the enclave of Afrin. However, the meetings did not achieve major outcomes.

"They will go back to Afrin to live in peace after Inshallah (God willing) PKK, PYD, YPG, and Da'esh are cleared", Yildirim said, according to state media.

Ankara continues to "spread lies" about its military aggression against Syria and tries to justify the action as an act of self-defense, Syrian Foreign and Expatriates Ministry said in two letters addressed to the United Nations chief and the Security Council chairman.
