Democrats Decline To Endorse Feinstein: Morse Gets House Endorsement

Whether or not it significantly alters the trajectory of the race remains to be seen, but it's really about time that progressive Democrats and California Democrats generally think carefully about whether or not Feinstein actually represents their values. Feinstein has been a senator ever since, winning five terms since 1992.

The top-two primary system in heavily Democratic California allows the two highest vote-getters to advance to the general election regardless of party identification.

Feinstein is a popular figure among Democratic voters and has the money to run a successful election campaign.

That means neither candidate will get the party's seal of approval or extra campaign cash leading into the June primary. She holds a lead over de León of almost 30 percentage points - 46 percent to 17 percent ― in a recent poll conducted by the Public Policy Institute of California. Neither candidate acquired the 60% threshold needed for official endorsement.

None of this is new to the senior senator. The question is whether de Leon's good showing will push Feinstein further left, too. A hot button issue that de Leon uses to back his position on Feinstein is what he considers to be an unwillingness to fight for the many young immigrants in the state that were brought to California as children through no fault of their own. They were annoyed that she didn't take a harder line on former FBI Director James Comey's abrupt termination previous year, or that she is much more of an ally of the intelligence community than of Silicon Valley on the encryption question. Kamala Harris and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi. Feinstein also recently said that former President Barack Obama's Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, which Trump is ending, was on shaky legal ground.

There is no evidence that Dianne Feinstein will lose her job in November. De Leon came closer with 54 percent to her 37 percent. Besides, she's the incumbent and an old pro.
