More deputies accused of waiting outside during school shooting

More deputies accused of waiting outside during school shooting

If proven true, "it not only makes me angry, it makes me furious", he said.

The Broward County Sheriff's Office posted a letter containing updates on the investigation into the shooting in Parkland, Florida on February 14, including the claim that local deputies didn't enter the school when they were supposed to. Peterson resigned and subsequently retired after being suspended without pay.

When those Coral Springs police entered the building, the four original Broward officers on scene did not join them, sources told CNN.

Two days after the shooting, Coral Springs Police Chief Tony Pustizzi addressed some of the concerns voiced by his officers in an internal email obtained by CNN that said, among other items, "I understand that another agency has given the impression that it had provided the majority of the rescue efforts, and that the tremendous work of the Coral Springs Police and Fire Departments has not been recognized".

Instead, the deputy who was on duty at Stoneman Douglas on February 14, in uniform and armed, chose instead to stand outside the building for at least four of the six minutes it took the gunman in to dispatch 17 former classmates and school staff, a distressed Israel told reporters Thursday afternoon. "I'll handle any violations of policy or procedures or whatever accordingly". Video footage showed Peterson did none of that, Israel said.

"Our police department has continued to work alongside the Broward Sheriff's Office to assist in any investigation pertaining to this incident", the department said later in a statement.

Nevertheless, the latest revelations, coupled with reports that BSO may have mishandled tips about the shooter Nikolas Cruz, are focusing unwanted attention on Sheriff Israel.

"I'm thinking, you know, this is a real one. We'll want to see where the facts are and we'll go from there".

Surveillance footage, from cameras at the scene, is now being reviewed which will provide definitive proof of the sheriff's office response, along with an official report from Coral Springs officers.

Coral Springs Mayor Skip Campbell said the city wants answers to the allegations.

"We had a heated discussion".

The sheriff did not say when the Coral Springs police chief made their allegations. "But I'm not going to disclose the aspects of the conversation and our agencies have a good working relationship".

"Any actions or inactions that negatively affected the response will be investigated thoroughly, and the information will be released officially", Sergeant Carla Kmiotek wrote in the statement.
