Rohit to captain India for Sri Lanka T20 tri-series

Now in a recent report mentioned in the Mumbai Mirror, current leading fast bowler of the Indian team and also a regular name in the T20 team, Jasprit Bumrah is also likely to be rested for the tri-nation series. Rohit Sharma has been named as the stand-in captain; Shikhar Dhawan too got a promotion and will be the vice-captain of India's 15-man squad.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni has also been rested as per his request. He said, "We've kept in mind the workload and upcoming schedule while finalizing the team for Nidahas Trophy".

Speaking to reporters, MSK Prasad, Chairman of All-India Senior Selection Committee, said, "Mr MS Dhoni was not available for selection as he had requested for rest".

Jaydev Unadkat and Shardul Thakur will lead the bowling attack that also includes seamer Siraj though on evidence of their displays in South Africa the former duo are likely to make up the seam specialists.

In the absence of Kohli, Rohit Sharma will lead the squad while Delhi's Rishabh Pant has been given an opportunity to test his mettle at the worldwide level with Dinesh Karthik included as the second wicket-keeper. Besides Chahal, spinners Akshar Patel and Washington Sundar are also in the squad.

The last time India took the field in a limited-overs tour without Kohli and Dhoni was 32 months ago - back in July 2015 for an ODI and T20I series against Zimbabwe. Hooda was among the top-scorers in the Vijay Hazare Trophy this season, making 352 runs at 50.28, while Shankar is fresh off scores of 84 and 100.

India announced as many as five changes as they brought in Deepak Hooda and Washington Sundar. Dhawan will be Rohit's deputy.

After this assignment, India would be participating in the Nidahas Trophy in Sri Lanka, which would be a tri-nation T20 contest comprising of teams like, Sri Lanka, India and Bangladesh.
