Transgender Wrestler Mack Beggs Booed After Winning Texas Girls Title

Transgender Wrestler Mack Beggs Booed After Winning Texas Girls Title

Beggs drew criticism past year for joining the female wrestling team when his parents claimed he was beginning the "transition" from female to male, using a testosterone regimen therapy.

Beggs (36-0), who won last year's Class 6A girls championship in the 110-pound division, won by decision 15-3 against Chelsea Sanchez of Katy Morton Ranch.

"He has so much respect for all the girls he wrestles", Beggs' mother, Angela McNew told the AP. "They're saying, 'steroids.' They're saying, 'Oh, they're beating up on girls, '" he said. Their requests have been denied because "Texas public high schools require athletes to compete under the gender on their birth certificate", according to reports.

Jordan Gutierrez, a university student who attended lasts year's state championship, reflected the common campus politics that resonates from many progressive professors and LGBT groups across America's colleges and universities.

Beggs, who has gone 132-9 over three seasons, including an undefeated record for the past two years, has a scholarship offer to wrestle on a male team, and would have preferred to wrestle against men in high school.

Mack Beggs has captured his second straight state wrestling title.

"I wanted to come out on top, and in my heart-I feel like a champion", Beggs said.

"If you're going to. transition to a male, then you should continue to take the roles of a male and compete as a male, because that's what you want to be", Gutierrez insisted at the 2017 championship, according to CNN - making gender an issue of choice, rather than a matter of one's actual biological birth traits. It was done to help schools determine competition, according to the UIL's deputy director Jamie Harrison.

"It sure as hell didn't stop me from doing what I wanted to do in the past, and it won't stop me from what I want to do in the future", Beggs said.

Despite all the backlash, Beggs entered the ring and capped a ideal 36-0 season.

The opposing coach and teammates had insisted the girl wrestle Beggs, but she refused, McNew said.

Still, other parents at the school say that despite everyone's support for Beggs' "transitioning", he shouldn't be allowed to compete in a contest of strength among other girls.

Texas has a new two-time high school wrestling champion. It finally paid off.
