Senate Approves Iowa Agriculture Secretary Bill Northey as USDA Under Secretary

Senate Approves Iowa Agriculture Secretary Bill Northey as USDA Under Secretary

Today by voice vote, the U.S. Senate confirmed the nomination of Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey to the position of USDA Under Secretary for Farm Production and Conservation. "Farmers and ranchers couldn't ask for a better person to lead this important USDA department". Northey will serve as Under Secretary for Farm and Foreign Agricultural Service. This appointment has been long overdue since it was created by U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, Sonny Perdue, in 2017.

Iowa's senators say they aren't sure what helped lift the hold on Bill Northey's nomination to the United States Department of Agriculture.

"For four months, Senator Ted Cruz has used his hold on the confirmation vote as a political football in an attempt to undermine the RFS (Renewable Fuel Standard)".

"We'd like to thank the Senate for moving Bill's nomination forward".

"I can tell you without question or hyperbole that Bill has been the hardest working, most knowledgeable, and most committed to farmers of anyone I have ever known". Bill will come aboard at a crucial time, as his knowledge and expertise will be immediately put to use as the new farm bill is formulated to address the needs of American farmers.

"It is a tremendous honor for me to be confirmed to serve as an undersecretary of agriculture". Specifically, Senators Chuck Grassley, Joni Ernst, Debbie Stabenow and Amy Klobuchar have been instrumental in not only gathering support for the nomination, but also working to move past those issues that have delayed his confirmation to date.

Northey began serving on the Iowa Corn Growers Board of directors in the 1980s, as well as serving as president for both the Iowa Corn Growers Association and the National Corn Growers Association.

The hold was seen as an attempt to gain leverage in the biofuels dispute, and Iowa Republicans have been pressuring Cruz, the victor of the 2012 Republican presidential caucuses, to lift the hold. After four months of delaying the move, Senator Cruz chose to lift the hold on Northey, and he was confirmed shortly thereafter.

"Bill has worked tirelessly for Iowa farmers and we look forward to him bringing his extensive experience to the national level".

"We are thrilled Mr. Northey is approved; he will be a fantastic addition to the USDA", said Emily Skor, CEO of Growth Energy.
