Boko Haram kills four aid workers in Borno

NAIJ.com had earlier reported that many persons were feared killed Thursday, March 1, as suspected Boko Haram insurgents staged a late evening attack on Rann, the headquarters of Kala Balge local government area of Borno state.

Nigeria's government's is under growing public pressure to respond to the Dapchi mass abduction and prove its repeated claims that Boko Haram has been defeated.

The 603 civilians held hostage by the insurgents but this week were being profiled before subsequent handover to officials at refugee camps northeast of the country.

For their part, the rebels killed two soldiers and four others were injured.

UNICEF, in a statement by Marie-Pierre Poirier, UNICEF Regional Director for West and Central Africa, also expressed shock on the attack against humanitarian workers in Rann.

"One of these fearless workers who lost their lives, and the nurse who is missing, were on the frontline providing critical services supported by UNICEF".

MOGADISHU, Somalia - The U.S. military said it killed two extremists and wounded another in an airstrike against al-Shabab fighters in Somalia.

"We strongly condemn this attack on selfless aid professionals, who were working in the most hard humanitarian conditions", said Marie-Pierre Poirier, UNICEF regional director for west and central Africa.

About 3,000 aid workers, majority Nigerian nationals, work in northeast Nigeria.

Meanwhile, Nigerian authorities have reportedly hired at least 300 Muslim clerics to continue to pray for the safe return of schoolgirls.

In a statement on Friday by Samantha Newport, Head, Communications, UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), Kallon was quoted as saying: "Aid workers put their lives on the line every single day to provide emergency assistance to vulnerable women, children and men".

Newport added that others killed were a medical doctor working as a consultant with UNICEF and an aid worker with the International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC) affiliate organisation.

Buhari also sympathised with the United Nations and other humanitarian agencies working at Rann, and in other parts of the country.
