Government closes Friday due to high winds

Scattered power outages are expected. Objects that could be tossed around by the wind should be secured. Gusts could exceed 45 mph in the metro, over 50 mph at the coast, over 55 mph across far northern Virginia, and over 60 mph in the mountains.

The Maryland Emergency Management Agency reported more than 65,000 power outages were reported across the state Friday morning.

Several school districts in the Washington region also closed, including in Montgomery County, Md., and Fairfax County, Va. - one of the nation's largest school districts.

LA PLATA, MD - A high wind warning is in effect for Charles County beginning tonight, March 1 at midnight to 6 a.m. on Saturday, March 3. This does not mean you should expect winds to start roaring through your trees promptly at 6 p.m. or that it will blow with constant strength until 11 a.m. Saturday - there are a few hours built into the warning for margin of error on either end, and the wind will come and go in rounds of gusts.

Make sure not to leave pets outside during the storm. Significant power outages could occur due to downed trees and power lines.

"We've already had conference calls. We will continue through tomorrow, possibly tomorrow night, and through the weekend as necessary", said Kate Hession, MEMA's director of operations.

The Maryland State Highway Administration says crews are preparing for the possibility of toppled trees and power outages. It only takes six inches of moving water to sweep a person off his/her feet, and 12 inches of moving water to move the average sedan. Use extra caution.Stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio or your favorite source of weather information for the latest updates.
