ICE Official: 800 Illegal Aliens Avoided Arrest Due to Oakland Mayor's Warning

The Department of Justice is looking into whether Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf obstructed justice by warning Northern California residents of an impending raid by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

"Sanctuary jurisdictions like San Francisco and Oakland shield unsafe criminal aliens from federal law enforcement at the expense of public safety", ICE Deputy Director Thomas Homan said in a written statement.

"Lock Libby Up", read a headline Wednesday in the conservative leaning Washington Times. The Justice Department, he said, is reviewing the matter. The illegals made good use of the warning.

Yoo added that Schaaf and others like Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel (D) are "coming very close to obstruction of justice". "We just want to make sure you remain silent until you get an attorney", said Pastor Trena Turner, executive director of Faith in the Valley. About 40 percent of arrests were non-criminal last fiscal year, up from about 25 percent in 2016. This is not about breaking up families. On a moral level, I understand that ... ICE reported one arrest in San Joaquin County. Schaaf is rightly and lawfully acting on her conscience to resist the intrusion by the feds into state and local law enforcement. "I do not regret sharing this information". "I encouraged people to not panic but to know their rights, to know their responsibilities and to know about the unique resources that are available in this community". "None of that is illegal".

"Who doesn't know that there is increased immigration enforcement?"

Dozens of protesters marching outside the agency's offices in San Francisco after Homan spoke chanted, 'Shut down ICE!'.

ICE said one of the people who eluded them was a Honduran arrested for transporting cocaine and for sex with a child under 16. Local 2 union, which represents thousands of workers in the service industry in the US and Canada. But City Hall's Trust Act - making Boston a de facto sanctuary city - forbids BPD from participating unless ICE has a criminal warrant.

By Wednesday, ICE had conducted its sweep and was able to collect 150 illegal aliens, though another 864 criminal aliens targeted for arrest were able to avoid capture.

Blanca Vazquez with the Bay Area-based Immigrant Liberation Movement says the Trump administration's stepped-up enforcement has galvanized immigrant communities to learn their rights and scrutinize ICE's actions.

"All immigrants matter", Flores said.

Ana Maria Fabian, 50, has been living undocumented in the United States for 20 years and said she's not fearful but has "a lot of sadness" for the families who were torn apart because of the recent deportation efforts.

This is proof ICE is starting to come to smaller cities, Chavez said, and "people live in fear and parents are scared they'll go to work and not come back".

"Every day as the mayor of Oakland I make decisions that are criticized". "Thanked for standing up".

"As in other communities that follow the same misguided approach, not honoring ICE detainers presents an unnecessary hurdle for law enforcement and poses a significant threat to public safety in the city", Brophy said.

Homan said ICE deportation officers were still able to remove many "public safety threats" from Bay Area streets.

"This raid was intended exclusively to terrorize innocent immigrant families and instill fear in the hearts of our communities", Pelosi said, "not to keep Americans safe".

The aim of the operation was to arrest individuals who have violated USA immigration laws.

That was a reversal of a 2014 memo issued by then-President Barack Obama that prioritized the arrests of those who had committed serious crimes.

"We started a firestorm", Gallo said outside City Hall on Wednesday.
