Kynard 4th in high jump at world championships

Kynard 4th in high jump at world championships

Qatar's Mutaz Essa Barshim, the 2017 IAAF world male athlete of the year, will be in action at the IAAF World Indoor Championships at Arena Birmingham today. Recording a season's best of 8:45.78 suggested her preparations were perfectly on track.

Muir won gold in both the 1500m and 3,000m at the European indoor championships previous year but faces stern opposition from Ethiopia's Genzebe Dibaba, the world record holder in both events.

Now she has a bronze medal to prove it was worth it.

She's in the final year of her veterinary degree at the University of Glasgow and started work on Wednesday morning in a small animal hospital.

"The pole vault competitions in Portland two years ago were very successful so we chose to continue with the high jump finals", said Chris Cohen, competition director of the event. I couldn't be happier.

"I just didn't execute an efficient plan and I didn't make good enough decisions in the race". It means so much to me. "I've been fourth, fifth and sixth at world championships and seventh in Rio, so to come away with a bronze here is excellent".

Hassan moved off the rail and nearly into lane three in an expedient bid to hold off Muir.

Even without taking that extra step on the podium, it was an excellent and mature performance from Muir.

Katarina Johnson-Thompson delivered an indoor personal best in shot put to sit second after three pentathlon events at the World Indoor Championships.

Kynard, who won the high jump title February 17 at the U.S. Indoor Championships in Albuquerque, N.M., cleared 7 feet, 6 inches on his third and final attempt for his placement.

In sitting back, she had the strength to attack and gained two places on the finale, so the approach paid off. Next on the agenda - or so she thought - was a flight, which later switched to a train as conditions worsened. When we were leaving the house there was a lot of snow and the taxi was two hours late.

"There was a time when I thought we weren't going to make it".

"Going through Carlisle it was just insane, but hats off to British Athletics and the taxi driver".

We made it! Birmingham bound! We tried to get flights but three or four were all cancelled, then all flights were cancelled so it was a matter of getting a taxi and trying to get down.

Muir, who clocked 8min 45.78sec, said: "This time yesterday I was in a taxi half way down the M6. We couldn't see the bonnet, the windscreen wipers were freezing and it took six hours", she said. But nothing necessarily needed to be changed because I was in shape to win a medal.
