United States downplays Putin's weapon warning

United States downplays Putin's weapon warning

Military commanders realize high-tech weapons being developed by Russian Federation and China will likely end up in the hands of other countries - and have been calling for better sensors to track cruise missiles, according to the report.

Putin, speaking ahead of an election on March 18 that polls indicate he should win easily, said in his speech that new Russian technology would render such defences "ineffective".

Putin on Thursday described Russian missile capabilities that had been little-discussed publicly in Washington in recent years - cruise missiles equipped with nuclear-propulsion engines, giving them essentially unlimited range and the ability to follow an unpredictable flight path.

Putin accompanied his statement to an audience of hundreds of senior officials and lawmakers with videos and computer images of new weapons, which were shown on giant screens at a conference hall near the Kremlin.

The Kremlin yesterday said Russian Federation will not be part of a new arms race as the United States and Germany voiced concern over Vladimir Putin's boasts of new "invincible" weapons.

So why now? These aren't new weapons or developments, so what explains the announcement?

"President Putin has confirmed what the United States Government has known all along, which Russian Federation has denied: Russian Federation has been developing destabilising weapons systems for over a decade in direct violations of its treaty obligations", Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the White House spokeswoman, said in response to Putin's announcement.

The Pentagon reacted with more equanimity, with a spokesman insisting that the USA military remains "fully prepared" to react to "anything that comes our way".

The Russian leader said the high-speed underwater drone also has an "intercontinental" range and is capable of carrying a nuclear warhead that could target both aircraft carriers and coastal facilities.

While it was unclear which ally Putin had in mind, the USA -led North Atlantic Treaty Organisation said the speech, one of the Russian leader's most bellicose in years, did not help calm tensions that have surged since Russia seized Ukraine's Crimea four years ago.

Have you freaked out about Russia's new missiles yet?

"No one else in the world has anything like that", Putin said.

Putin said the Avangard has an intercontinental range and can fly in the atmosphere at a speed 20 times the speed of sound.

Plant added that while "Russia already has a ton of systems that can threaten and overwhelm USA missile defenses", Putin's announcement reflects his country's concern that the US missile shield could grow powerful enough to become a game-changer. "So it totally makes sense for them to try and find ways to defeat not what it is now, but what it may become". He added that Sarmat also carries a bigger number of nuclear warheads, which are more powerful than the ones on Satan. The missile called Kinzhal is carried by aircraft and is capable of flying at a speed 10 times the speed of sound. -Russian arms control agreements, adding that Russian military experts and diplomats would be ready to discuss new weapons systems with their US counterparts.

Although Putin said his announcement was meant to get the attention of the USA, he also said he was open to talks with Washington.

The Trump Administration interprets Russian statements and actions over the past several years, including its annexation of Crimea and military incursions into eastern Ukraine, as requiring a stronger USA nuclear deterrent.
