LL Bean to raise gun purchase age

LL Bean to raise gun purchase age

In a statement, Walmart said: "In light of recent events, we've taken an opportunity to review our policy on firearm sales".

And while we never expected Walmart and Dick's Sporting Goods to emerge as leaders, we're grateful they are taking the common sense steps our politicians are unwilling to do to keep our kids safe.

Kroger, the nation's largest grocery chain, said that since a mass shooting last month at a Florida high school that killed 17 people, it's become clear that gun retail outlets must go beyond what current US laws requires. The sporting goods store had stopped selling the "modern sporting rifles" after the Sandy Hook massacre, where 20 students and six adults were killed in 2012, but were still allowing them to be sold in the chain Field and Stream.

In announcing the change in policy, the company said it had processes in place to make sure it was applied for online sales.

In addition to banning the sale of "assault rifles", Dick's made clear it will also ban the sale of "high capacity" magazines and will no longer sell firearms to anyone under 21 years of age.

An afternoon recap of the day's most important business news, delivered weekdays.

L.L. Bean said in a statement late Thursday that it will no longer sell guns or ammunition to anyone under the age of 21.

On Wednesday - two weeks after the shooting at a high school in Parkland, Florida, Dick's Sporting Goods announced that shoppers under the age of 21 would be barred from purchasing firearms from stores.

Stack also revealed that Nikolas Cruz, who killed the students in Florida using AR-15 assault-style rifle, had purchased a shotgun at a Dick's store within the past four months. Seattle-based REI has been facing mounting pressure from some customers.

Many gun-rights advocates, including the National Rifle Association, oppose raising the minimum age to buy a weapon. Florida lawmakers have already voted in favor of a $67 million bill to arm and train teachers to act as "armed school marshals".

"It is a risky game but you can't please everyone, " said Joseph Feldman, a senior managing director at Telsey Advisory Group. I do not have one bad thing to say about this store.

"I am a member of the NRA, and I have a concealed carry license, I just don't see the need for young people".

"I firmly believe that it is morally and constitutionally wrong to infringe upon the rights of a law abiding citizen in any way, and I will not work for a company that pushes for the restriction of the Second Amendment", Degarmo wrote.

Other hedge funds and other institutional investors have also modified their holdings of the company. Like Canada's MEC, REI does not sell firearms but does sell outdoor products from companies that VistaOutdoors owns. The Outdoor Industry Association hasn't responded to requests for comment.

Platt said she now plans to start buying more at her local Dick's store, including a pair of sneakers this week.

Dick's is one of the biggest gun retailers in America, so its decision is significant.

Out of the 4,000 gun sales a year, Oberg says this happens about once or twice. CEO James Debney said on a conference call. The company ended sales of assault-style rifles at Fred Meyer several years ago in Oregon, Washington and Idaho.

The NRA has aggressively pushed back on the idea of raising the age limit for purchasing firearms to 21, especially after President Donald Trump said the age should be boosted as well as adding regulation which promotes strong background checks.

But, Davis said, REI's move also seemed to be a new twist because it shows how companies are being drawn into issues that aren't directly related to their businesses.
