More indoor glory for flawless Dibaba

More indoor glory for flawless Dibaba

Jamaican Kimberly Williams has won the silver medal in the women's triple jump at the 2018 IAAF World Indoor Championships in Birmingham, England on Saturday. It was eventually Muir who hung on for bronze, a first global medal. "We couldn't see the bonnet, the windscreen wipers were freezing and it took six hours", she said.

However, while she went into the race unbeaten this year, she had only faced domestic opposition.

Korir was favourite to win the men's 800m race and was due to run his first heat yesterday.

Much of that success had not only been down to Dibaba but to Meseret Defar, who had won four golds, two silvers and a bronze over those eight championships.

Netherlands' Sifan Hassan (8:45.68) edged Muir (8:45.78) into bronze.

The American, who smashed the world record at the distance last month, crossed in 6.37sec, ahead of China's Bingtian Su of China and United States of America team-mate Ronnie Baker. The Liverpudlian finished outside of the medals in London but is in good form and is perhaps better suited to the five-discipline contest, finishing a tantalising 13 points shy of the world record in her most recent pentathlon in 2015. They have a whole day to the heats.

The first 400m was completed in 75.31 with Muir still ahead.

Muir and her Andy Young, coach, had been forced to get a cab from Glasgow on Wednesday night when the weather closed in, forcing all flights to be cancelled and stopping trains.

How Muir got there was brilliant.

Halfway was reached with the German ahead in 4:41 and 1600m in 4:58.66.

It's fair to say that Genzebe Dibaba likes racing indoors. The Ethiopian's 400m up to the bell was a vicious 62.43 and she was now clear but Hassan and Muir were in hot pursuit and began to close along the back straight. Approaching the final turn, the deficit narrowed to a matter of metres but Dibaba gritted her teeth again and kept the pursuers at bay with a final circuit of 30.46 seconds. "This time yesterday I was in a taxi halfway down the M6 and it was insane", Muir said. This is a great competition and the race was fantastic. This day is for me and my country.

"I think every race I get better". "I've not seen the race back".

"I'm feeling confident. I'm coming in off a string of three PRs and coming to this meet I'm just trying to get adjusted so I can be as confident as I can be. I think that will be enough to make the final and then my target is obviously a gold medal".

Denise Lewis said: "It will be frustration and she should be frustrated". Last year indoors I made the top three for the 600m and this year I came in first. I ran as hard as I could. "I stayed calm and made it through". Like I keep saying, I know I am in really good shape and I will take each round as it comes.

It is impossible to overstate the current quality of women's middle-distance fields.

Her team-mate Eilish McColgan came 10th in the 3,000m.
