Storm, floods, snow kill 5 in US Northeast

Storm, floods, snow kill 5 in US Northeast

The fierce nor'easter that flooded streets, snapped trees and knocked out power to more than 1.8 million homes and businesses will not go away quietly, as forecasters warned hard-hit coastal residents in MA to brace for more strong winds and major flooding into Sunday.

Emergency officials urged residents on higher ground to stay indoors, even after the storm pushed out.

Around Washington, D.C., downed power lines cut electricity to 170,000 people in Virginia, Maryland and the District.

The National Weather Service warned that the next high tide around noon EST (1700 GMT) would bring renewed flooding, with a surge of up to 3 feet (0.9 m) and waves of up to 25 feet, and a warning was in effect for virtually the entire New England coastline.

High winds, rain and flooding is taking place in Scituate and the surrounding coastal areas of MA as a storm known as a "bomb cyclone" makes it way past the East Coast.

Almost 1.7 million properties are without power and at least one person has been killed.

The East Coast has been pummeled by extreme weather, with Winter Storm Riley leaving more than a foot of snow in the western and northern parts of NY.

The storm also snarled transportation from the Middle Atlantic into New England, with more than a quarter of flights into and out of New York's three major airports and Boston's airport canceled on Friday, tracking service FlightAware.com reported.

Conditions are expected to improve as the storm continues moving on Saturday.

The poweroutage.us website, which tracks utilities across the nation, reported early Friday afternoon that NY was the hardest hit state with more than 208,000 homes and businesses without electricity.

The other five people killed included two children. Others were an 11-year-old boy in NY state; a 57-year-old man in Upper Merion, Pennsylvania; a 77-year-old woman in Baltimore; a 72-year-old man in Newport, Rhode Island and a 44-year-old man in James City County, Virginia, ABC News reported. A 77-year-old woman died after being struck by a branch outside her home near Baltimore.

In Boston, many streets were closed and city officials advised people not to drive or walk in high water.

"People need to take this very seriously", Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker told a Thursday press conference, telling people to prepare for a repeat of the flooding that affected much of state's east coast during the January 4 "bombogenesis" winter storm. In Pennsylvania, Gov. Tom Wolf was sending 90 guard members, mainly to help communities hit by heavy snow in the Poconos Mountains. LaGuardia and Kennedy airports in New York City were brought to a near standstill. The New York-Washington leg of the passenger service was still suspected Saturday morning.

All were hit by falling trees.

"Pretty much everyone on the plane threw up", a pilot wrote in a report to the National Weather Service.

Dulles also briefly evacuated its control tower due to high winds.

Barges carrying construction materials broke loose from their moorings near the Tappan Zee Bridge, which crosses the Hudson River, said Laura Ware, public involvement manager for Tappan Zee Constructors LLC.

In the western NY town of Hornell, 30-year-old Anna Stewart milked the 130 cows on her dairy farm on Friday in a barn powered by a generator hooked up to a tractor.

People who lost power won't get it back quickly. Hornell got more than 14 inches of snow.
