These companies are distancing themselves from the gun industry

These companies are distancing themselves from the gun industry

Gunshot wounds are down by 20% when annual conventions of the powerful United States weapons lobby, the National Rifle Association (NRA) are happening, conclude researchers Wednesday.

Does this mean we need to arm the clergy in houses of worship; or sales associates in malls; or servers in restaurants; or doctors and nurses in hospitals?

The NRA was created in 1871 by military veterans to improve shooting skills in the wake of the Civil War.

That response shows the nuances many companies are dealing with in the current debate over guns.

"In terms of assessing what the companies are doing from a moral perspective, I think what strikes me is that it's always better to do something because you want to than because you have to", said Joe Holt, an expert on business ethics at the University of Notre Dame's Mendoza College of Business.

The outdoor retailer released a statement on its website saying, "No company in America is more dedicated to, and more supportive of, the goals of the National Rifle Association than MidwayUSA". In a statement Monday, FedEx said the company "opposes assault rifles being in the hands of civilians" but that it would continue offering discounts to NRA members, joining other companies who have stuck by the group after coming under intense pressure to sever ties following the school shooting, which claimed the lives of 17 people earlier this month.

In 2015, it took in $337 million and spent $303 million.

While the group contributes to members of both parties, the lion's share goes to the GOP.

The NRA has the money to gets its views across. Almost 2,000 of the total injuries involved children under 18 years of age, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

It donates only a little directly to politicians. Lt. Gov. Mary Taylor, a Republican who has consistently received an "A" rating from the NRA, used the Parkland shooting to distance herself from Gov. John Kasich, who angered gun groups in the tragedy's aftermath when he implored President Donald Trump to enact "commonsense gun laws", including a ban on bump stocks that make semi-automatic weapons work like automatic ones.

Lawmakers live in fear of losing NRA support.

That activist consumer atmosphere - coupled with the February 14 Parkland, Fla., school massacre and the always heated gun-control debate - make this a potentially tricky situation for companies looking to protect their image and bottom line.

The list has grown since NRA executive director Wayne LaPierre's speech last week at the Conservative Political Action Conference outside Washington, in which he called any effort toward gun control a move to "make you less free". So we capitulate to the fear they create in our psyches, and fall for their twisting of the Second Amendment's meaning.

The organisation aggressively publicises those ratings.

She believed the NRA and its members are being unfairly targeted.

The NRA has its share of celebrity supporters.

The decrease, the researchers said, is likely fueled by the brief period of gun abstinence during such conventions-a possibility that warrants further exploration and analysis.
