'Black Panther' Remains Box-Office Champ For Third Consecutive Week

'Black Panther' Remains Box-Office Champ For Third Consecutive Week

That total puts Black Panther past Finding Dory, which was previously the tenth highest-grossing domestic film of all-time with $486.2 million. That's in the ballpark of last year's similarly themed spy flick Atomic Blonde, which bowed to $18.3 million, and Lawrence's 2016 sci-fi movie Passengers, which opened to $14.9 million. In first place is Star Wars: The Force Awakens, with $90M and Avatar is secone with $68M.

Overall, Black Panther has continued the recent tradition set by "Spider-man: Homecoming" and "Thor: Ragnarok."It builds a stand-alone story full of heart and compelling character development, but it also connects to and has greater implications for the Marvel Cinematic Universe at large, especially with "Avengers: Infinity War" looming ever closer on the horizon. It is an enjoyable, ground-breaking movie for those of all backgrounds".

"Panther", which also stars Lupita Nyong'o, Michael B. Jordan, Daniel Kaluuya and Martin Freeman, has now taken in almost $900 million globally, with its opening in China still days away. A billion is clearly a lock, with the potential for a lot more. It's simply outstanding and there just aren't any other words I can use to describe what we're witnessing.

But the R-rated "Red Sparrow", which cost Fox at least $100 million to make and market, divided critics and received a lukewarm B grade from ticket buyers in CinemaScore exit polls. Lawrence is one of the few female names considered a decent draw these days, even if she hasn't had many major hits outside of The Hunger Games series.

Lawrence, one of Hollywood's most popular and highest-paid actresses, was last seen in Darren Aronofsky's "Mother!".

Ryan Coogler's film kept new releases Red Sparrow and Death Wish from the number one spot in its third weekend on release with an impressive $65.7 million (GBP47.6 million). "Get Out", which was released a year ago, generated $176 million in ticket sales.

Next week sees the release of A WRINKLE IN TIME. But "Death Wish" is in a better position to turn a profit, as it is the cheaper of this weekend's releases with a $30 million budget.

Its global box office gross is near $400 million: $396,600,000. The movie is just shy of passing 2017's Beauty and the Beast ($504 million).

It is no coincidence that "Black Panther" debuted in Black History Month or that Gil-Scott Heron's famous lyric "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" (a song that promotes black awareness) was used in the official trailer. To date, the United Kingdom leads all territories with $49.1 million, followed by South Korea ($41.4 million), Brazil ($24.9 million), Australia ($22.3 million) and Mexico ($22 million).

And in fifth place was Sony's "Peter Rabbit", taking in $10 million in its fourth week out.
