Brad Stevens: Gordon Hayward is 'not playing this year'

Brad Stevens: Gordon Hayward is 'not playing this year'

Gordon Hayward ignited a mini firestorm Friday when he released a video on The Players Tribune of his current rehab program from the fractured ankle he suffered in the Celtics' season-opening loss to the Cavaliers. "One goal", and he added that there's more to come, so keep an eye out for more encouraging videos.

We know. We just told you Gordon Hayward nearly certainly won't return to the Boston Celtics this season.

Given that Hayward is signed to a four-year deal, it's in the Celtics' best interest to protect him for the long-term.

For the caption, Hayward wrote, "Patience".

However, head coach Brad Stevens has always maintained that they don't expect the former Utah Jazz man to return this year and he reiterated this once again in an attempt to dampen expectations with his most definitive comment so far.

Who would've ever thought five minutes into the National Basketball Association season that Gordon Hayward would even have a shot at returning to the Boston Celtics this season. "I mean, I don't know what else to say".

It's unfortunate that Hayward is indeed going to have to miss all but one game during his first season in Boston, but the Celtics seem to have at least found their groove lately.

Stevens said he had no problem with videos of Hayward rehabbing, but noted that they don't necessarily paint a complete picture of where the forward is at physically. "He's up to 60 percent of his weight on the Alter-G".

"He's progressing, yes. He did another alter-G [treadmill] workout this morning", said Stevens.

"And I think the videos are great, too". "But he's a super-long way away from even being in a 1-on-1 workout where he's cutting".

So, cracked a reporter, we should check back tomorrow.
