Hunter helps No. 1 Virginia edge Louisville 67-66

Hunter helps No. 1 Virginia edge Louisville 67-66

Louisville has had a rough couple of weeks, and Thursday night didn't make things any better.

With the win, the Wahoos are the first school to ever finish 9-0 in conference games on the road in the ACC.

"I thought if we kept plugging, it was there", said Virginia coach Tony Bennett, calling the milestone "a really good accomplishment". "I think that's been the key". Virginia sophomore guard Ty Jerome then passed the ball to freshman De'Andre Hunter, who found himself open beyond the arc before nailing a huge game-winning triple to send Virginia into another victory.

Louisville finds itself possibly trending up in the eyes of the NCAA tournament committee after last Saturday's 75-68 win at Virginia Tech, but the Cardinals are still squarely on the tournament bubble. But the big question - did Virginia win it, or did Louisville lose it?

The 'Hoos host Notre Dame in their regular season finale Saturday.

Cane Broome scored 13 for the Bearcats (26-4, 15-2), whose stifling defensive play helped them build leads as large as 19 in the first half and 33 in the second.

That gave Virginia one final chance.

Zavier Simpson supplied 12 points and Duncan Robinson scored all 11 points after halftime for the fifth-seeded Wolverines (25-7), who have won six straight.

The Knights (17-12, 8-9) got a double-double from senior forward A.J. Davis, who had a career-high 31 points and 14 rebounds, and 23 from guard B.J. Taylor, but lost their third in a row.

The Cavaliers trailed by as many as 13 in the second half but showed their resilience on both ends of the floor to claw their way back from a poor-shooting first 35 minutes of the game.

In an anything-but-ordinary season for the Louisville Cardinals, Thursday night's last-second loss to the Virginia Cavaliers was in a class of its own. "Well, I don't know how accurate that is. I just forgot I couldn't take an extra step and I was just trying to get it to Darius".

Here's the footage. If you're a Louisville fan, it's the toughest few seconds you've seen in quite some time.
