Oscars 2018: 'Shape of Water' takes home best picture

Oscars 2018: 'Shape of Water' takes home best picture

"Documentary (short subject): "Heaven Is a Traffic Jam on the 405".

In the lead acting races, Frances McDormand is heavily favored to win for "Three Billboards" and British actor Gary Oldman's performance as wartime leader Winston Churchill in "Darkest Hour" is widely expected to bring his first Oscar.

In a statement about the need for inclusion in the industry, she got all of the female nominees in the room to stand to highlight their work. "We all have stories to tell", McDormand proclaimed.

"Thirty years ago when the business just started up there, the people up there began to learn from the best in the world and now they are some of the best in the world", Dale told reporters backstage.

"Animated Short Film: "Dear Basketball".

Del Toro called his fellow directors "my compadres", saying he was an immigrant like them and had spent the last 25 years living "in a country all of our own" - partly in America, partly in Europe and elsewhere.

Del Toro, who was previously Oscar-nominated for Pan's Labyrinth's Original Screenplay, cemented himself as the Best Directing frontrunner when he won the trifecta of the Golden Globe, BAFTA and Directors Guild Award.

"Guillermo del Toro today won the Academy Award for the Best Director for his visually-stunning inter-species romance 'The Shape of Water", a fitting reward for his life-long obsession with monsters and creatures.

Alexandre Desplat took home best original score at the 2018 Oscars for his warm and melodic music for "The Shape of Water".

A Fantastic Woman from Chile bagged won the Best Foreign Language Film. It is being hosted by Jimmy Kimmel for the second time in a row. Highlights included Ansel Elgort and Armie Hammer shooting hot dogs from canons, Lupita Nyong'o and Margot Robbie doling out candy, and Kimmel calling on a random man in the audience to introduce the next presenters. "We should continue to do that", he said in his acceptance speech.

But towards the end of the show, Salma Hayek fronted the presentation of a video of stars advocating for women's rights and racial equality, including Ava DuVernay, Chadwick Boseman, Lee Daniels and Geena Davis. Roger Deakins, taking best cinematography for Blade Runner 2049, joked, "I guess I better say something or else they'll give me a Jet Ski".
