South African Listeria Linked to Polony from Enterprise

South African Listeria Linked to Polony from Enterprise

Keeping them among other products could cause cross contamination.

On Sunday, it emerged that the listeriosis outbreak that has seen close to a thousand cases and almost 180 deaths began at an Enterprise cold meats facility in Limpopo.

Tiger Brands said it had learned about the presence of listeria in its products on 14 February - 18 days before the government forced it into a recall.

Of the people interviewed 85% had eaten some sort of ready-to-eat processed meat, Motsoaledi said, mostly polony.

In terms of registration for exports by the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries DAFF, the respective processing or manufacturing establishments namely Rainbow Chicken Limited foods with an export registration number ZA32 and Enterprise foods with an export registration number ZA 33 have been temporarily suspended till further notice. The city is the capital of South Africa's Limpopo province. The outbreak strain, ST6, was confirmed in at least 16 environmental samples collected from this Enterprise facility. Tests were done, and it was found that they had listeriosis.

Stores should refund consumers who returned the recalled products‚ partly consumed or not‚ even if they no longer had a receipt‚ said deputy consumer commissioner Thezi Mabuza. Enterprise says it is cooperating fully.

Responding‚ the National Consumer Commission has instructed Enterprise to urgently recall all its polony‚ smoked Russians and frankfurters and Rainbow has been instructed to do the same with its chicken viennas.

Investigation of the RCL Wolwehoek production facility is also underway.

Results from the factory tests should have taken just over two weeks but a shortage of solution used for testing listeria in the country delayed results‚ said National Institute for Communicable Diseases Dr Juno Thomas. Polony was the most commonly named processed meat product, followed by Vienna/sausages and other "cold meats".

Poor hygienic standards have been blamed for the listeriosis outbreak that has claimed nearly 200 lives in South Africa.

Motsoaledi on Sunday identified polony as a definite source, but warned that sausages and cold meats not typically cooked could also be affected due to the risk of cross contamination.

People with compromised immune systems, like some of those living with AIDS and pregnant women, are at a heightened risk, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

Sunday's public health warning and the ready-to-eat meat recalls will likely begin to contain the outbreak, but only time will tell how quickly that occurs.

This is what most of the patients in the outbreak that killed 180 people were infected with. That listeriosis outbreak caused 22 deaths of mostly elderly Canadians.

Additionally‚ more than one Enterprise Factory was implicated. This constitutes 27% case fatality rate.
