Trump ribs staff, press and family at annual Gridiron Dinner

Melania wasn't the only member of President Trump's family to be the butt of the joke on Saturday.

At Washington's famous Gridiron Club Dinner, the annual white-tie event that has been attended by every president since 1885, Trump called the assembled journalists his "opposition party", telling one and all, "So I was very excited to receive this invitation to come here and ruin your evening in person".

Mr Trump joked about his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, who has reportedly had his security clearance downgraded. Fairness is important to me, but you know, you've got your point of view.

Ivanka and Kushner, decked out in formal wear, can be seen in the video below being redirected as they arrived at the Renaissance Washington Hotel. "He is straight. Man". "He is straight!" said Trump.

President Donald Trump's senior adviser for policy Stephen Miller. "Put that down!" Trump said.

Trump pointed out Attorney General Jeff Sessions in the audience - a man the President has criticized relentlessly for removing himself from the investigation into Russian election meddling.

President Donald Trump appeared to shelve his ongoing feud with the media on Saturday night, as he fired off a string of self-deprecating jokes in a jovial and upbeat evening at the annual Gridiron Dinner.

Towards the end of his speech, Trump talked about Deferred Action Against Childhood Arrival. "That is awful honey, but you love me, right?" "And I say - and I get in trouble for this - 'she has to immediately take an IQ test, ' and people go insane".

"We practiced very hard for things that don't come naturally to us", said Sen. "I won't tell you what she said", he continued, before adding that she'd told him to behave. He joked: "So many people have been leaving the White House".

Trump showered praise on the only major news channel that he adores - the conservative Fox News, calling it the "fourth branch of Government". "Arthur inherited billions of dollars, and he turned it into millions". "I like chaos. It really is good", he said.

According to Mother Jones Washington bureau chief David Corn, Trump "humiliated" his wife, First Lady Melania Trump, who accompanied him to the event.

Unlike the widely-televised White House Correspondents' Association dinner, which Trump chose to skip a year ago, there are no cameras allowed inside the white-tie Gridiron event. He later referenced the #FreeMelania hashtag.

He then attempted to fix any inference that the first lady might leave him by praising her for the job she's done and by saying "she's actually having a great time". He was likely referring to a joke Trump made about his recent spate of White House departures.

Landrieu also took aim at Trump's Cabinet - and, in the tradition of these kinds of everyone-is-fair-game speeches, a fellow Democrat.

Trump also raised the not-necessarily-comedy-gold subject of the nuclear standoff with North Korea, saying: "I won't rule out direct talks with Kim Jong-un".

Trump teased the possibility of talks with North Korea, saying Pyongyang had "called up" and asked to begin a dialogue but said that he responded with "you have to denuke" first.
