AIPAC: Guatemalan President Announces He'll Move Embassy to Jerusalem in May

Trump's symbolic move drew waves of worldwide criticism when first announced in December 2017 (see WikiTribune's previous coverage).

Morales thanked U.S. President Donald Trump for "leading the way" in the embassy move and indicated that it was his decision that prompted Guatemala "to do what is right".

With woke jokes like-"We don't make films like Call Me By Your Name for money, we make them to upset Mike Pence", and "Oscar is the most respected man in Hollywood, no penis - the type of man we need more of in Hollywood"-the one thing worth watching Sunday, besides who would win the actual Oscars, was whether the patriarchy or the president would be a richer target". Morales also mentioned "the excellent relations that we have had as nations since Guatemala supported the creation of the State of Israel" in the 1947 UN partition vote.

The Central American nation is the first country to announce it would move its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem since President Trump in December recognized Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

The global community does not recognise Israeli sovereignty over the entire city, home to sites holy to the Muslim, Jewish and Christian religions.

Jerusalem city council member Aryeh King spoke to Arutz Sheva about the significance of President Trump's Jerusalem declaration last December, and what Israel must do at this critical juncture in history.

We have no ads and no paywall. In 1947, as Israel struggled to gain global support for the U.N. Partition Plan for British Palestine, Guatemala became one of the first countries to voice support for the Jewish state's creation.

Morales nevertheless soon followed Trump, making Guatemala the first country to do so.

Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales told a cheering crowd on Sunday that "as a sovereign decision, we recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel".

The UN assembly overwhelmingly voted in favor of the resolution that called on the United States to withdraw the controversial recognition.

Guatemala will move its embassy in Israel to Jerusalem in two months, just two days after the United States plans to relocate its embassy to the city.

Guatemalan lawyer Marco Vinicio Mejia challenged the Guatemalan President's decision in court, arguing that moving the embassy would be a violation of worldwide law.

The two discussed deepening bilateral ties and cooperation. The country's close relations with the U.S. is largely defined by its dependency on USA financial support.
