England edge New Zealand to take series lead

England edge New Zealand to take series lead

Once again, they showed their class in a nervy situation and both these incredible cricketing nations pulled off another classic encounter in this series.

Tom Curran and Woakes then bowled well at the death, with the latter restricting Williamson from scoring the 15 runs needed to win in the final over. By their own admission, they were shoddy in the first match but still pushed New Zealand close despite being a couple of gears below their best.

Opener Colin Munro was snared by a stunning Ben Stokes catch at short cover for 49, and Mark Chapman was removed by Moeen Ali for eight. They scored 234 runs in the meantime.

The fourth ODI will take place on Tuesday evening. "They deserved to win".

He faced 143 deliveries and was in the middle for most of the New Zealand innings after the early dismissal of Martin Guptill for three.

The blame for the defeat falls squarely on the Kiwi middle order. Tom Latham has passed 40 just once in his last ten ODI matches.

Williamson's opposite number Morgan was full of praise for Woakes, who kept his cool after Williamson pulled a six off the third ball of the last over. Mark Chapman is new to global cricket and needs time to bed in. When they raised their game in the second match, they blew the hosts away. The indications are that they were honest with themselves after the opening game and resolved to do better which they did. In the second match, they slumped to 82 for 5, a position from which they never truly recovered.

Williamson had his 34th ODI half-century - and become the fifth fastest player to reach 5000 ODI runs - and Mitch Santner played a useful supporting role.

It was a calamity of errors at the Westpac Stadium.

The hosts benefited from a very marginal call when Santner squeezed Rashid to mid-wicket, where Jason Roy stooped to claim the low catch which would have made it 112-7, only for the third umpire to uphold the on-field "soft signal" of not-out because there was no clear evidence the ball had carried.

When Munro was out, the score was 80 for 2. "We had to take the game even deeper and it was just a shame not to get across the line tonight". It was challenging, but we committed to the plan."The fact we have defended 230 is a big feather in our cap". FOr Black Caps Ish Sodhi took three wickets in 10 overs. Unsurprisingly, Williamson showed the way. Finally, off his 53rd ball, he found the boundary when he sent Boult over the off side. It was a superb exhibition of batsmanship. I've got no concern about the middle order, no.

"We knew we would've been in the game if we got somewhere between 220-240".

"It was a game where we didn't fire, we weren't at our smartest and we didn't adjust as well on a tough surface, so that's all it is". The guys have been batting beautifully. It's looking promising for Ross. "Tommy [Latham] and Henry Nicholls have both been playing really nicely but it wasn't to be tonight".

With England going 2-1 up in the series, Morgan was not prepared to complain about the process for ruling on disputed catches. Williamson, Taylor and Guptill can't do it on their own.
