Former Hollyoaks actress takes home Oscar for Best Short Film

Former Hollyoaks actress takes home Oscar for Best Short Film

Shenton - who wrote and starred in the film - shared the award for Best Live Action Short Film with her fiancé, director Chris Overton.

Rachel also said she was "terrified" as she took to the stage and signed her acceptance speech, having learned sign language at the age of 12, when her father went deaf after a course of chemotherapy.

Mr Overton's parents baked them and Ms Shenton's mother and partner sold them in their workplace as the couple raised the £10,000 necessary.

Her speech touched on the main themes of the film which draw attention to the obstacles and barriers faced by deaf children every day.

Collecting the award at the ceremony in Los Angeles, Ms Shenton, from Caverswall, delivered her speech in sign language.

The 30-year-old was inspired to write the film because of her own experience.

The 20 minute short film follows Libby as she learns to communicate through sign language, with the help of a social worker.

When picking up the award Shenton signed her speech - something she says Maisie made her promise to do.

"Deafness is a silent disability, it is not life threatening and you can not see it so I want to say the biggest thank you to the Academy for allowing us to put this in front of a mainstream audience". "She always said we'd win". Thank you. Our movie is about a deaf child being born into a world of silence. The Silent Child produed by Rachel Shenton just won an Oscar.

Celebrities have worn black at various events such as the BAFTAs and the Golden Globes to show their support for the movement, however Emma Watson chose to take it that step further when she turned up to the red carpet at the Oscars with a new tattoo. Well done @RachelShenton and @overton54 on the greatest moment ever! "It is handsome. The BIGGEST CONGRATULATIONS!"
