Hidden Steele Memo Says Russia Stopped Romney From Becoming Secretary of State

Hidden Steele Memo Says Russia Stopped Romney From Becoming Secretary of State

It was former British spy Christopher Steele's sense of duty and obligation to an ally that compelled him to warn the US about Russia's bad intentions ahead of the 2016 election, Jane Mayer writes in a wide-ranging biopic for The New Yorker.

A lengthy New Yorker profile on the ex-MI6 operative delves into both Steele's past and current dealings with congressional committees and special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russia's meddling in the 2016 presidential election.

As to how well-informed Steele was, Mayer tells us he only found out who was paying his client, opposition research firm Fusion GPS, "several months" after signing the contract.

The New Yorker magazine in an exclusive report sourced the sensational allegations to a second dossier authored by British spy Christopher Steele.

This memo is reportedly based off of intelligence gathered from one specific "senior Russian official", who was passing along what he had heard in the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The rumors said that "the Kremlin had intervened to block Trump's initial choice for Secretary of State, Mitt Romney".

Specifically, the memo says that Russia wanted a U.S. Secretary of State who would lift sanctions on Russia that were related to Ukraine, and who would side with Russia in regards to Syria. "If what the source heard was true, then a foreign power was exercising pivotal influence over USA foreign policy and an incoming president", it said.

According to a report in The New Yorker, it's possible that Trump changed his mind on Romney because Russian Federation told him to.

There's also the pair's viral dinner meeting, complete with a somewhat embarrassed-looking Romney and a smirking President-elect Trump. "In a humiliating public spectacle, Trump dangled the post before Romney until early December, then rejected him", the report said.

The two former rivals (Trump also had endorsed Romney in 2012, though he claimed Romney begged him for it) met at Trump's club in Bedminster, New Jersey on November 19. Roger Stone, a longtime Trump adviser who has been openly critical of special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation investigation, told the publication Trump may have been "vengefully tormenting" Romney but never seriously considered him.

Romney is running for Senate in Utah with Trump's endorsement.
