Trump Says He's Considering Attending Controversial Jerusalem Embassy Opening

Trump Says He's Considering Attending Controversial Jerusalem Embassy Opening

The president, a former NY property developer, claimed that he is saving taxpayer dollars on the construction of the embassy.

Trump and Netanyahu were expected to discuss Iran's growing influence in Syria and the USA nuclear deal brokered by former President Obama at Monday's meeting.

The Palestinians, meanwhile, said Trump's decision on Jerusalem renders the United States an unreliable actor in peace talks.

For Netanyahu, however, the Oval Office meeting and address to the pro-Israel lobby group AIPAC on Tuesday offer a respite from his legal troubles. Palestinians and other critics insist it will be dead on arrival. Israel sees Trump's efforts to crack down on its archenemy as lacking.

Donald Trump said he may attend the opening of a controversial new USA embassy in Jerusalem, a fraught prospect created to underscore close ties with Benjamin Netanyahu, as he hosted the Israeli leader at the White House on Monday.

According to the police, Netanyahu and Mozes held talks over an "exchange deal", in which Netanyahu would receive favorable coverage in Yediot Aharonot in return for promoting a law and other measures that would limit the distribution of Israel Hayom, Yedioth's main rival. And although Israel's government is overjoyed by Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital - with a US embassy set to open in the holy city in May - misgivings are percolating under the surface over Iran, where Israel sees Trump's efforts to date to crack down on Israel's arch-enemy as lacking.

But they are also concerned that the administration is not doing enough to counter Iranian activity in Syria and Lebanon. "We're going to have it built very quickly". Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., speaking Sunday on CBS' Face The Nation.

East Jerusalem has been occupied by Israel since 1967 and the Palestinian leadership has outright rejected a mediating role for the USA after the move to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital. An already volatile situation now looks even more combustible than normal. Trump reiterated Monday that a peace deal would be a "great thing". Top-ranking USA officials including Vice President Mike Pence and U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley will also address the conference.

"Last month, police recommended Netanyahu be indicted for bribery, fraud and breach of trust in two different corruption cases".

Hefetz was a suspect in Case 4000, which dealt with the relationship between Israel's Ministry of Communications - then under Netanyahu - and Israeli telecommunications firm Bezeq, controlled by Netanyahu's friend, Shaul Elovitch, also a suspect in the case. Kushner has also been stripped of his top security clearance in another blow to his credibility as an global negotiator.

"Iran has not given up its nuclear ambitions".

The timetable for transfer of the USA embassy in Israel is uncertain. US officials negotiating with Britain, France and Germany appear to agree with the Europeans, prompting the Israeli concern.

"I think they are partners in ideology, and the ideology is a populist, conservative ideology which says that the old liberal elites are against us", said Gayil Talshir, a political scientist at Jerusalem's Hebrew University.
