Toyota Diesel Cars Will No Longer Be Sold In Europe After 2018

Toyota Diesel Cars Will No Longer Be Sold In Europe After 2018

In particular -after 20 years of hybrid leadership and more than 11 million global sales, including over 1.5 million units in Europe- the company is interested to learn from them as to how it can keep improving its hybrids and make them more attractive to new types of customers.

Toyota will have no diesel passenger cars on sale in Europe by the end of this year, citing limited demand and widespread uptake of hybrid alternatives.

An auto industry turning away from diesel and European drivers increasingly favouring hybrid cars: add it up and the result is clear - advantage Toyota.

Toyota will continue to offer diesel engines for its Land Cruiser 4x4 as well as for commercial vehicles such as the Hilux and Proace. The third-largest automotive company increased its sales in Europe previous year by 14%, while the vehicle market as a whole grew by far more modest - 3.4%. Diesel and petrol has played such a big part in the Irish motoring psyche that it is going to take some time for us to evolve towards hybrid and electric.

Based on customer feedback the brand has made a decision to offer its core models with a choice of two hybrid electric powertrains.

Underneath the new bodywork lies Toyota's TNGA platform, which also underpins models like the Prius and the C-HR. Last week, for example, it was reported that automotive giant Fiat Chrysler Automobiles plans to eliminate diesel engines from all its passenger vehicles by 2022. Ford still backs diesel but sees it disappearing in some segments, according to Steven Armstrong, chief of the automaker's European operations.

Now more than 60 per cent of Burnaston production is hybrid. It will slowly phase out the diesel models from its lineup over the course of this year.

Toyota has pulled the covers off its all-new Auris hatchback at the Geneva motor show, showing the world the vehicle that will go into production at its Burnaston factory in Derbyshire later this year.

'The new generation Auris - to be produced in Burnaston next year - will come with three powertrains, including two petrol-electric hybrids. The models account for less than 10 percent of its sales in the region.
