Battling England draw with Argentina in Sultan Azlan Shah Cup

Battling England draw with Argentina in Sultan Azlan Shah Cup

Australia put India out of contention for a place in the final as they beat the Sardar Singh-led squad 4-2 in their third league match here at the 27th Sultan Azlan Shah Cup 2018 on Tuesday.

The match will begin at 3.30 p.m. Soon after Sumit missed a big chance to score his second as he shot just wide from point-blanked range in front of the open goal, Ramandeep deflected the ball into the goal to make it 4-1 for India in the 54th minute.

India had lost their tournament opener to Argentina 2-3 before drawing 1-1 with England. The new entrant in the Indian team did exceptionally well to pick up a baseline pass from Gurjant to tap it over the Malaysian goalkeeper.

India played a tough opponent in the opening match of the Azlan Shah Cup as they went up against Olympic champions Argentina.

The following minutes saw Indian goalkeeper Suraj Karkera stay busy at the post as he made some brilliant saves to deny the hosts. India did well to dominate with ball possession, while its defence stuck to its task.

Meanwhile, Surender Kumar, Shilanand Lakra and Sumit Kumar worked in tandem to win the first penalty corner of the match in the second quarter but Amit Rohidas's flick was blocked away.

Meanwhile Australia maintained their 100 per cent record in the tournament as they lead the standings with nine points. Sumit Kumar, Ramandeep Singh and Gurjan striked in the final quarter to make things worse for the hosts and help their side register a thumping victory.

Thereafter, India pushed hard and got two goals through Ramandeep Singh, one push getting deflected off Jeremy Edwards stick into goal and then a lovely reverse stick strike giving India their 2nd goal as scores were cut to 2-4.

Table toppers Australia scored through Mark Knowles (28'), Aran Zalewski (35'), Daniel Beale (38') and Blake Govers (40'), while India's response came via Ramandeep Singh (52', 53').

After an infringement by India in the 28th minute, Australia were awarded a penalty stroke and their skipper Mark Knowles made no mistake as he sent the ball past Krishan Pathak, handing Australia the lead.
